A life in video gaming!?

Hello out there to my fellow gamers.

Now this is my first blog haha its probably easy to tell.
I just wanted to share my thoughts.
Ive been out of work for coming up to seven months now and I've been pretty much playing on my xbox 360 everyday since. Now i love video games! RPGs, First Person Shooters, Driving You name it ill give it a shoot.

Its never really occurred to me until just this evening that securing a job in the game industry would be like a dream come true for me. Ive been giving it thought on what sort of job i would like to pursue nothing really took my interest and well the video game industry i never thought as a possible real job. i guess i stereotyped the people who work in that industry as super brainy geniuses. i know that's sort of true. but I'm sure you would not need to be super brainy to get a job in the industry. Now i no how to play video games i could even review them any game i play i normally research an find out all i can about it.

Now i also wanted to ask the people who read this blog or even the NZGamer staff, What does it take or someone need for someone to secure a job with in this industry or even a job with NZgamer.

I guess overall really . . . i want a job. a job that i would love! a job that involves things i love doing. If that so happens to move me to a new town an a fresh start i don't mind.

Thanks for reading. And i promise to work on my writing skills. hahahaha

Happy Gaming!

Welcome mate.

The gaming industry is open to all sorts of jobs I imagine.

And your right when you say you don't have to be super smart. Without concept artist's or a great degree of leadership a game would never see the life of day. So if number crunching isn't your thing there's always different options.

And that's only the game development side.

I'm in graphics design, and there is a lot of call for that in the gaming industry. It doesn't necessarily take lots of braininess, just lots of imagination.

It's heaps of fun, too.

I'm pretty sure that Sidhe Interactive in Wellington offers scholarship for people who wish to study game development.

I think Sidhe would be a great start - http://www.sidheinteractive.com/ Regarding NZGamer.com jobs, jump to our Contact Us Page (http://nzgamer.com/about/contact/) and drop a message to our Editor Tristan Clark. Cheers!

I met the guys from Sidhe once, it was great.

Tbh I still look to gaming industry as a dream job as I'm more or less able to do anything, I've studied Design as well as doing my current BIT degree...but it seems to be a long shot.

I would personally like to be a part of a major gaming community from concept through to creation level...but it's like impossible.

Dreams are free for me I suppose T_T

Best of luck though, don't spend too long unemployed though as it looks bad, I learnt that the hard way :D

This is me procrastinating for tomorrow's exam...thanks for the read

It would be awesome. Some degree of computer literacy would be required I think (particularly with graphics design packs etc.), but I also beleive that it is a HUGELY competitive job market. You would be competing with other gamers, after all.

I would love to be an artist for some kind of game developer, but I don't think I'd be much good at the coding side of things.

Be careful... sometimes people find that working in the industry makes games less fun because when you play a game, you instead picture how it was made and it can ruin the immersiveness of it. I tentatively say *sometimes*, so consider that too.

That's actually a good point. I already do it with some aspects of design.

Haha yea i know what you mean i have played a lot of video games. I'm also a huge online player. which means I've benched marked my favourite game (COD4) online an if nothing is up to its standards i don't really bother playing it! That's ruined a lot of online games for me. but to be honest some games are really slacking in the online department, which is what i reckon the biggest market of the video game industry is.

Oh man! Don't get me started with wanting to be in the gaming industry.
It would be totally awesome to get a job anywhere in there. But, I don't know where I'd fit either.
Even bringing coffee tot eh editor would be sweet.
Hope the editor for NZGAMER reads this... if he's looking... lol

Funny Ive been thinking the same thing for a while.
I suggest trying to get alot of involvement in the industry, with anything. Gaming is a huge worldwide industry at the moment but dont expect to get rich off of it anytime soon.

For me, I write reviews for a magazine and although I dont get payed I get free games and a bit of exposure. I also work as a video game specialist at an electronics store. Just anything to be a part of the industry aye.

Also message the NZgamer staff, their really helpful and will give you a few pointers in the right direction.

Sweet!

Yeah man same. I have no talent except for many game ideas which noone would take on board. I'm quite happy just buying games. And playing them.
