Titanfall 2

Titanfall 2 was a great shooter that just happened to come out at the same time as the current two FPS juggernauts in gaming. Because of that, I feel that it didn't quite get the recognition that it deserved.

Having not played the first game, I wasn't familiar with some of the mechanics such as the wall running and Titan controls. Fortunately, the game does well to introduce these features early on during the campaign in a way that was easy to understand and gave lots of room to practice. The wall running is a great mechanic where it greatly boosts your momentum, allowing you to move quickly through a room/area and adds that extra dimension when considering strategy and position.

Piloting the Titans probably has to be my favorite feature when it comes to Titanfall 2. You get a reasonable selection of load-outs that are suited to different situations and play-styles. The campaign gradually introduces each load-out so you get plenty of time to test and get used to the current one before a new one is unlocked. You generally unlock a new Titan loadout right before a battle where that load-out is most suitable so you're not being thrown in the deep end either.

The campaigns story isn't the best I've ever played through, it's a pretty standard FPS scenario - shoot all the bad guys and save the world sort of story. The real fun in the campaign is the gameplay and the variety in the levels. Each level seems to offer something different from the previous, one will have you ascending a massive satellite/radio structure where another will have you running/jumping between large flying ships. Add in the Titans and you've got one hell of a ride. The campaign has you switching between Pilot and Titan regularly enough so that you're not getting bored of playing the same way everytime.

The multiplayer in Titanfall 2 is definitely a strong point. I'm not usually one to play online, especially when it comes to shooters so I was rather surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I stuck to Attrition mode which is your standard team death match. The 'bots' are a great addition to the multiplayer gameplay in that someone who is new to the game or isn't the best at FPS games can still contribute to the team score and gradually get confident enough to take on other players. Of course the Titans make it stand out from other FPS games. Getting into your Titan during a multiplayer match is a great feeling where you can wreak havoc across the battlefield and take on other players Titans.

Gameplay is where Titanfall 2 shines. It is fluid and has much variety to it to keep players interested. If you're sick of the conventional FPS games that saturate the market then Titanfall 2 is definitely worth giving a chance.

Great review.

I loved the first one and played it to death. I bought Titanfall 2 day one and I finally played it for the first time about 2 months later. Sadly I've still only completed the tutorial and nothing more.

Between October last year and now there have just been way too many good games and it's hard to decide your time when you have all current consoles. I'll eventually get there with Titanfall 2.

Definitely didn't get the attention it deserved. It's the sole reason I still turn my Xbox on these days. Amazing game. It's actually my personal all time favourite multiplayer game. Great review man!
