Avatar: The Legend of Aang

AT A GLANCE

"Making strategies easy to come up with."
The Good: Element control, cheesy cartoon visuals.

The Bad: Bland presentation and RPG clichés.

The Ugly: A bender going insane and flooding an orphanage.

In THQ’s latest cartoon tie-in, Avatar: The Legend of Aang, fans of the series will take control of four of their favorite characters in an Action/RPG romp. For anyone who isn’t familiar with the cartoon, Avatar is based in a world of four nations divided by their elements. Each nation has benders - people who can control the elements. Each generation there is one bender who can control all four elements; they are known as the avatar. As the title suggests, in this case it’s Aang.

Players will control Aang and his friends: Katara, Haru and Sokka. Training them to use new abilities and control the elements, building them into a strong team while traversing huge environments. The battles – as with every other Action/RPG on the planet - will be a mix of martial arts and magic against original enemies created for the game, and some that were featured in the cartoon. Control over the elements will be limited to Water, Air, Earth and Fire. The combinations will be limited, making strategies easy to come up with.

Avatar: The Legend of Aang is sure to please the fans of the cartoon. However, will it be enough to cater for the hardened Action/RPG crowd? With only four elements it sounds limited, to say the least. Given that it’s based on a cartoon, the environments should be varied enough to keep it looking fresh, and prevent repetition setting in.
