AT A GLANCE
| The Good: Rock Band gameplay 99% intact; fun Lego sound effects | "It's Rock Band, so it's fun. But still: why?" |
| The Bad: Can't see much reason for its existence | |
| The Ugly: Nothing! Those Lego characters are adorable |
As we were being shown around the Xbox booth at E3 yesterday, we ran into Lego Rock Band. I'd completely forgotten about it, after all the excitement with The Beatles. But we waltzed on up, and to our surprise it looked just like...Rock Band.
Oh sure, the people singing were Lego characters, and the coloured notes that scrolled down the screen were cute little Lego blocks...but otherwise it looked identical! We were horribly confused - sure, we get the idea that this is meant to be a more family-friendly Rock Band game, but surely songs like Pink's So What isn't overly family-friendly, and no kid will really care about The Final Countdown.
Singing and playing bass at the same time didn't really work out in this instance. But constantly failing made us aware of another new feature: there is no failing! Nope, every time you drop out, you seem to just lose some bricks (think the points system in Lego Star Wars) and are then put back in. I suppose that makes things more family-friendly, although Rock Band 2 does already have a no-fail mode.
Undeterred, Lucy and I stepped up to the guitars and mic to give that latter song a go. Luckily (unluckily?) for you, we were videotaped:
And that's all we noticed from our time on the game. Who knows, perhaps we can find out more - because right now it just doesn't make much sense to us. Still fun, of course - this is Rock Band, after all. I should just remember I can't hit those high notes in Final Countdown.
