Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is the 8th core entry in Midway’s Mortal Kombat franchise, replacing a scrapped ‘next gen brown’ version that had been inspired by Epic’s Gears of War franchise. This installment pits the Mortal Kombat warriors against DC characters with all the ‘jiggly physics’ of the previous generation’s MKs – so let’s hope Wonder Woman is in it. When it was first announced there was a lot of speculation as to whether it would retain the fatalities of the previous titles. However, we can confirm that it will have both Fatalities and Brutalities for the Mortal Kombat and DC Universe fighters respectively.

Last generation, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance took the 3D fighting from Mortal Kombat 4, slowed it down and introduced new fighting styles for each character. Midway then refined the engine in Deception and perfected it with Armageddon. Once again they are bringing a new fighting engine to Mortal Kombat with Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe enabling two styles of fighting: Freefall Kombat and Klose Kombat. Free Fall Kombat will have combatants continue the fight in mid-air while falling from one area to the next, while Klose Kombat zooms in to reveal the gruesome bruises you and your opponent have inflicted – with as much detail as your HDTV or monitor can deliver!

As yet, only a handful of fighters from each series are confirmed, including Mortal Kombat’s Shang Tsung, Sonya Blade, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, Jax, Kitana and Scorpion while Batman, Superman, Catwoman, Captain Marvel, Green Lantern, Joker and The Flash are confirmed for the DC Universe line-up. We expect a few more characters from each universe as the title nears completion. Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon has said in interviews that a few of the DC fighters will have some of their powers stripped – such as Superman’s invincibility - to balance out gameplay.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is also taking locations from the DC comics and Mortal Kombat so each character will have their usual battleground; picture Scorpion fighting Superman in Metropolis or Catwoman whipping Sonya Blade in Gotham City.

At this point it’s anyone’s guess as to how MK vs. DCU will turn out; it was only just announced a few months ago. However, early signs point to it being one of the better superhero fighting games. Keep it locked on NZGamer for any further announcements regarding this title.

captain marvel is generally quite even with superman strength-wise, however either would smash any other character in the game. unless batman got his kryptonite ring...

Superman is vulnerable to magic (apparently). That's how they get around the invincibility thing.
