AT A GLANCE

The Good: Playing a soldier in a horror game. "Silent Hill comes to PS3 and Xbox 360."
The Bad: The thing creeping up behind you.
The Ugly: The mess Alex Sepherd leaves behide him.

The Silent Hill series has been one of the most successful survival horror franchises and Resident Evil's scariest competition since its debut on the PlayStation. Two generations of consoles later and the series is getting ready for its fifth game in the main series. This time around Konami’s Team Silent has passed on development duties to The Collective.

In this latest installment of Silent Hill, players will take the role of war veteran Alex Shepherd who, due to the sudden disappearance of his younger brother Joshua, has taken leave to search for him. The game will start players off in the small town of Shepherd’s Glen and eventually lead them to the infamous town of Silent Hill. In keeping with the tried-and-true Silent Hill formula, Silent Hill V’s gameplay will remain relatively unchanged; players will solve puzzles, and run away from or gun down monsters. Alex Shepherd’s experience as a soldier will also affect combat, allowing him to use a number of guns and melee weapons such as shotguns and knives.

If early screenshots are any indication, Silent Hill V is going to make great use of the next gen console power in rendering environments, with a lot more darkness hiding the incredible detail on high resolution textures. Of course Silent Hill is known for its dark, atmospheric environments crawling with monsters ready to scare players out of their mind. We'll see if the latest addition to the series can live up to its namesake when it releases.
