Battlefield: Bad Company

AT A GLANCE

The Good: Things that go boom. "Blowing things up has turned into a hobby."
The Bad: May not capture the magic of the PC version of Battlefield.
The Ugly: Playing as a hero, not a soldier.

It is no fun at all when there is a small squadron of soldiers held up inside a building taking pot shots at you through the windows - the only way to get rid of them is to raid the house and hope you have the quicker trigger finger. No longer is that the case with DICE's brand new Frostbite engine, the new system that has been built from scratch specifically for their new king piece in the series, Battlefield: Bad Company.

BF:BC is moving up past the solid multiplayer aspect that its predecessors focused on and is now incorporating a single-player campaign that people will be able to enjoy. The single-player game will follow a small group of soldiers who are in a flunk arm of the military known as 'B-Company', also known as 'Bad Company'. While on a mission, they happen to come across a convoy transporting a large amount of gold bullion, so naturally they make it their objective to find and claim it for themselves. Hence our story begins.

One mechanic of the game has drastically changed how people will play it – the destructibility. Over ninety percent of BF:BC has been rumored to be destructible; trees, buildings, bridges, vehicles, even the ground itself can be made into a shallow depression to shelter you from incoming fire. With a flexible environment to play around in the battlefield will be more like a kindergarten where it will foster your childish need to put a hole in everything you see.

Multiplayer is also utilizing this catering system of destruction, which means that campers and cowards are no longer safe inside a structure. If some nasty player is taking blind shots at you and there is no way for you to hit them back without first exposing them, then a simple stick of C4 or a well placed grenade will do the trick. Mind you, so will an air strike…

Keep your gun by your side around March for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. There is also a rumor about a PSP version under development but no promises yet. Keep checking back with your fellow kiwi gamers at NZGamer.com.
