The first Alone in the Dark is often credited as the one of the original survival horror games. Coming out in 1992, it certainly predates games like Resident Evil by a significant margin. However, in the last few years, the series has fallen into the shadows as games like Silent Hill hog the limelight.
This might change, however, with the release of the new Alone in the Dark, coming to the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC sometime this year. Under development by Eden Games, and being published by Atari, the latest Alone in the Dark has started gaining a lot of attention, for all the right reasons.
Alone in the Dark will be released episodically, much in the same way as the latest Sam & Max games. Each instalment is being referred to as an episode, while the term ‘season’ is used to cover the first bunch of these episodes. This TV-like form of reference carries over into the gameplay itself, which has been described as cinematic and full of plot and character twists.
You’ll assume the role of Edward Carnby, the original Alone in the Dark protagonist. While not much (read: practically nothing) is known about the storyline, we do know that you’ll explore the mystery of why Carnby seemingly hasn’t aged a day since the original game. The first season will also take place almost exclusively within New York’s Central Park.
Visually, Alone in the Dark is certainly looking sumptuous, and looks set to earn the ‘cinematic’ label that has been attached to it. Less is known about the gameplay at this stage, unfortunately, but if it can live up to the visuals we’ve seen, gamers should be in for a treat.
Check back often for more info on this intriguing reinvention of an old series. We’re guessing the game will be released close to the Christmas period, but as soon as a release date is confirmed, we’ll let you know.
