Too Human

AT A GLANCE

The Good: The dynamic camera may provide a truly cinematic experience. "It's shaping up to be nice, if it comes out this time."
The Bad: Everything screams: "Been there, done that."
The Ugly: The game was originally announced in 1998. Ouch!

If Duke Nukem Forever is the ‘screwing in a light-bulb’ joke of the industry, then Too Human is the ‘your momma’ joke. With a development time of nearly 10 years, it was originally scheduled for release on the original Playstation. Silicon Knights then announced a partnership with Nintendo, and the title was shifted to the N64. However, the title was then shifted to the Gamecube, only to finally end up as part one of a trilogy that would appear on the Xbox 360. Talk about your town bike.

It’s easy to lose sight of the game itself, thanks to all the ridiculous delays and platform shifting. Little was known about the game until the recent E3, where a select few got a demonstration of the title. The game now appears to be an action game with role-playing elements – and it will be devoid of all camera control.

Too Human will cast the player as a soldier who has been enhanced with cybernetics to fight a war against sentient machines. Hardly anything original, but Too Human promises an engaging story to accompany the action, so hopefully Silicon Knights will introduce some sort of conflict within a man who is both human and machine.

The gameplay promises to be along the lines of Devil May Cry, with players combining swords and guns to create attack combinations. Like its premise, the game’s gameplay is pretty standard stuff, but Silicon Knights’ have an amazing reputation, so Too Human is unlikely to be cookie-cutter stuff.

The most noticeable aspect of the game is that the camera is dynamic. The player will hardly control the camera, which swoops in, out and around of the action to give a highly cinematic feel. All reports indicate that the gameplay isn’t hampered by such a camera, so it appears as if a truly cinematic action experience may be delivered to Xbox 360 owners.

Too Human looks like it’s shaping up to be a solid release. However, the game has been demonstrated on a variety of different consoles, so hopefully the Xbox 360 will be the final host. If it is, the only hurdle Too Human will have to overcome is the dreaded curse that accompanies most games that have been in development a long time: the curse of sucking.
