Okami is one of those games that gets released to perfect 10/10 reviews and critical acclaim, but unfortunately gets missed by the masses. It certainly didn’t help that by the time this game hit the PlayStation 2, a lot of gamers were caught up in the ‘next gen’ bandwagon. Word of mouth eventually gave the title something of a cult following.
If you missed the boat the first time around, good news - Okami is pawing its wolfy way to the Wii. Now ‘port’ is a dirty word for video gamers, and often a leap to another platform is less than graceful. Luckily, early reports suggest that much care has been taken and Okami rests in good hands. Gamers returning to visit Nippon won’t be in for anything new, as the game is virtually identical to the PlayStation game, only running in a better resolution and featuring new controls.
For those that have yet to play the game, you play as Amaterasu, a sun goddess that has taken control of a wolf statue. Playing through the game, you return the savaged world of Nippon back to its former glory as you increase in power. Throughout the game you will find many new abilities. Each corner you turn in this beautiful game will unearth new surprises.
To say that exploring the wonderful world in Okami is a pleasure would be an understatement. Okami is hands down one of the most imaginative and complete game worlds I have ever had the privilege of experiencing. It’s quite rare for me to feel so attached to a game, but as cheesy as it sounds, flicking on Okami almost feels like coming home and putting on your comfiest slippers.
If exploring a wonderfully atmospheric world full of stunning secrets, crazy characters and perplexing puzzles wasn’t enough, Okami’s presentation is simply stunning. The artwork is gorgeous, and the sound is also very atmospheric. Okami is just one of those games where all the parts come together to create one sublime experience.
If you own a Wii and are yet to delight in this game – pardon the cliché, but you simply owe it to yourself to purchase this game.
