Like a good many, I have had my fill of war games. They are everywhere you look. Strategy, Shooter, Simulation – all saturated with war titles. So is Battalion Wars just another war game?
The first thing to remember is that Battalion Wars is brought to us by the people that gave us the ingenious Advance Wars franchise. Despite the name change, Battalion Wars very much resonates with the design styling of the portable titles. Totally different however is the gameplay.
Advance Wars was a turn based strategy game, but Battalion Wars is a third person shooter with strategy elements. Don’t make the mistake of playing Battalion Wars and wanting it to be a deep and complex game - it isn’t. What it does promise to be though is entertaining, and perhaps a great game for people that do want to shoot stuff but perhaps have a bit of a thought process involved as well. As well as giving commands, you can jump into vehicles for a taste of the action.
Gameplay footage shows the Wii-mote being put to good use, selecting on-screen icons to quickly change units and give commands. This is exactly what the Wii needs - more games that utilise the functionality of the remote without being gimmicky.
Unfortunately a lot of people are going to be put off by the ‘kiddy Nintendo’ graphics, but I welcome them. Surely we have enough realistic war games? Hopefully these visuals and the gameplay will make for a unique experience and further back up Nintendo’s growing library of solid titles for the system.
Oh, and unlike the GameCube game, this title will support multiplayer. There are a variety of head to head or co-operative game modes to fiddle with. This feature alone will make this game worthwhile to hardened fans of the original.
