AT A GLANCE
| The Good: Using the Wii controllers in all sorts of interesting new ways. | "More of the surreal craziness you'd expect from SpongeBob." |
| The Bad: It's Gamecube port, but will this version be on par with others. | |
| The Ugly: Giant plankton on a rampage! |
This upcoming release from THQ and Blitz Games has had gamers and reviewers alike excited for a good long while, due in part to the general wackiness of SpongeBob Squarepants in general, and also due to its unique and interesting approach to the Wii controller.
Creature from the Krusty Krab takes you to Bikini Bottom and beyond, as you are plunged into the surreal and bizarre dream worlds of SpongeBob, Patrick and a giant plankton. Each has its own distinct style, and appear to be based on the retro styles of 50s and 60s pop art – like some sort of Warhol or Lichtensteinian dreamscape. SpongeBob flies through the city evading a plankton intent on destroying everything in its path; later on you also get the chance to play from the plankton's point of view. Patrick, meanwhile, dreams of interstellar flight...
What’s cool about this game is that the controller is used in quite a wide range of ways, depending on the level. You can control SpongeBob in a biplane by holding the console like a flight stick, hold it horizontally during the hot rod racing level, or smash it around like a club as you destroy the city. There’s even a nod to the older gamers among us, with the inclusion of horizontal gameplay reminiscent of the old NES control pad.
All up, SpongeBob Squarepants: Creature from the Krusty Krab looks to be an excellent entry from THQ, with great style, diversity of gameplay, and some truly inventive gaming. Anyone who is a fan of SpongeBob and his crew will love the game, as will those who are looking for a fun, good looking vehicle for their new Wii console.
