Atari Are Making a New Console

Runtime: 0:21    Author: Ataribox    Category: Trailers

The old school hardware creator, publisher and developer is working on a new console, Polygon reports.

The news came during an interview with Gamesbeat, when Atari's CEO Fred Chesnais confirmed, "we're back in the hardware business."

Chesnais unfortunately didn't elaborate on many aspects of the console, only confirming the validity of the teaser video above, which recently launched along with a new website. The console is reportedly also based on,"PC technology."

The last console the company launched was the Atari Jaguar back in 1993. They since moved to game development, until filing for bankruptcy in 2013.

It's unclear whether the Atari Box will be a full-fledged console, or simply a throwback akin to the NES Classic.

The console's official website lets people to subscribe via email for when more news is available.

If I were a betting man, I'd say it will be a throwback device like the NES classic.

I don't particularly want a 4th box to buy of it's a fully fledged new beast, but atbthe same time a new entrant to the console race could makebtge landscape really interesting.

Is this the 3rd or 4th iteration of Atari who have nothing to do with the original company? This is still Infogrames right?

Too much risk in something new with alot of established competition already, so I'd put my money on a throwback device after the success of the NES classic and the obvious demand. But hopefully they are looking to do it well and not just a Raspberry Pi with basic emulators.

Definitely a throwback, particularly with the success of the NES Classic Mini it's time to cash in!

OK, this is just weird?!? It's based on PC tech so it's probably not a retro machine because even the lowest spec PC today would be massive overkill?? Plus there's already a retro machine on the market. The Atari Flashback 8 Gold comes with 120 built-in Atari 2600 games. What are they thinking??
