[UPDATE] PS4’s System Update out Tonight, Brings Pro Boost Mode

Runtime: 1:49    Author: PlayStationEU    Category: Trailers

UPDATE: PlayStation NZ have informed us that firmware version 4.50 rolls out later tonight in New Zealand. We've updated the story below to reflect this.

Original story follows:

The latest firmware update will be arriving for PlayStation 4 systems tonight. Version 4.50 brings multiple new features, including external hard-drive support, PlayStation VR tweaks, and the Pro’s Boost mode.

Here’s some of the features, via the PlayStation Blog.

  • Improved 2D Images on PS VR – the home screen on your TV will look sharper, and Cinematic Mode is getting a higher refresh rate if your screen size is set to small or medium.
  • Voice Chat for Remote Play – if you’re streaming to your PC or Mac, you can now use a microphone.
  • Off Console Availability – an icon shaped like a smartphone will appear next to users in your friends list, showing who is logged into PSN but away from their system.
  • Boost Mode (PS4 Pro) – designed to increase performance for select legacy titles. May result in more stable framerates, and shorter load times.

For a full run-down, watch the above video, or head on over to the PlayStation Blog.

Love the name btw. But why does this happen? I have roughly the same amount of free space as you but updates fail regularly?

I'm on 2GB now, but external support could be handy. It has saved our bacon with the ONE...

I can't believe the PS4 still can't dispense beer yet. What are the eggheads at Sony HQ doing all day?

Decent update but nothing too exciting for me, still got over 700GB free on my PS4, won't be using external HDD anytime soon.

Honestly though, I don't Youtube/Twitch/Stream my legendary gameplay to an audience of 9 year olds. I don't manage hundreds of online friends and my 1TB HDD is big enough. So I've dealt with the fact updates usually have nothing worth while to offer.

2nd best update... the first being the USB Music Player & Youtube app (I still don't understand why these weren't available on release).

At first glance, it looks as though we have to format an external HDD on the PS4 - depending on the file format, this could make the HDD useless on any other device, in which case we might as well have installed the HDD into the PS4. I'm hopeful this isn't the case & we can fill these with images, music, movies, etc for use on the PS4 - if not, I'll have to accept that I need two HDD's constantly jacked in.

It's the same on Xbox, I have a 2TB external plugged into my XB1 slim, had to format it for use and can't use it with anything else. Not a problem for me tho as I only bought it for the extra storage on my XB1 anyway.

Don't forget you have to pay for playstation plus for a system that can't even do a basic feature like pour a beer.
