Just Cause 3 has received multiplayer support on PC, in the form of an unofficial mod. Industrious fans from Nanos – a group better known for their multiplayer mods for Mafia II and Grand Theft Auto V – released the beta over the holiday break, alongside a trailer.
As PC Gamer points out, this isn’t to be confused with cancelled multiplayer mod JC3-MP. That was a separate endeavour started by modder Cameron Foote, who was then hired by Avalanche to work on the game itself.
This mod – rather confusingly titled JC3:MP – gives players the ability to race, skydive, explore, and shoot each other in the game’s large map. Hundreds of players are supported on a single server, with “state-of-the-art synchronization reducing lag to a minimum.” It isn’t without its caveats in this beta stage however – world damage isn’t reflected across players’ worlds, and grappling hook wiring has been disabled.
According to the FAQ, the game is only currently available on the team’s website. Future versions “may be available on Steam.”
