Overwatch’s Symmetra Gets Overhauled

Developer Blizzard revealed today that Symmetra – a support character in their colourful competitive shooter Overwatch – will be receiving a substantial mechanical overhaul.

In the above video, lead designer Jeff Kaplan talks at length about the types of changes arriving for Symmetra. Namely, her turrets and weapon will all be tweaked, and she’ll receive a second ultimate ability.

“Symmetra is going to be the first character in Overwatch to actually have a choice of ultimates,” said Kaplan. “She will have two ultimates available to her at all times of the match.”

When her ultimate is charged, she’ll now also get the chance to place a shield generator for her entire team to make use of. She’s also getting a new move called Photon Barrier. It’s a directed projectile, but it creates a moving shield that players can get behind while it’s in motion.

Kaplan hopes that these changes will encourage people to try out Symmetra, who has been deemed highly situational from the community. These changes will be available for PC users on the Public Test Realm soon.

Awesome sounding changes...

But I don't get it. Nothing wrong with situational characters.

I think they just want to make her viable across more scenarios, like most of the roster.

Situational is an understatement, Symmetra has had a pretty consistent <1% pick rate at most large tournaments.
