New Xbox Play Anywhere Initiative Announced

While on the Microsoft E3 stage, a new initiative called "Xbox Play Anywhere" was announced , and going forward will mean that any titles purchased sporting this branding will be playable on both the Xbox One and Windows 10 PC at no additional cost.

In a statement on Xbox Wire, the company stated that this is all a part of their vision for the future of Xbox:

We see a future full of choice, without being constrained by technical boundaries, devices people play on, or console generations.

As this shift continues, we want to ensure that you have more freedom and opportunity to play the games you want, with the people you want, and on the devices you want. We see this not only as a gaming world where you can play without boundaries, but one that goes beyond generations.

At Xbox, we believe you should have a diverse and expansive library of games. That’s why, in addition to the many exciting games we announced today for Xbox One and Windows 10, we unveiled the new Xbox Play Anywhere program that will enable you to buy a game once and play it on both the Xbox One and your Windows 10 PC.

The list of games that are currently a part of Xbox Play Anywhere include:

  • Killer Instinct: Season 3 - Available now
  • ReCore - releasing September 13, 2016
  • Forza Horizon 3 - releasing September 27, 2016
  • Gears of War 4 - releasing October 11, 2016
  • Arc: Survivial Evolved - releasing December 16, 2016 to Game Preview
  • Halo Wars 2 - releasing February 21, 2017
  • Scalebound - releasing in 2017
  • State of Decay 2 - releasing in 2017
  • Sea of Thieves - release date TBA
  • Cuphead - release date TBA
  • Slime Rancher - Xbox One release date TBA
  • The Culling - Xbox One release date TBA

The majority of these are upcoming titles scheduled to release over the coming year, and there has been no word at this stage as to whether the program will be retroactively added to any other titles released prior to Microsoft's E3 2016 Briefing announcement.

Yeah not to surprised with this with Forza, Gears and Killer Instinct showing up on Win 10 this year. Still this is very nice and makes me happy just because it means I will be able to play Cuphead.

Sounds good. Hopefully some third parties get on boards, but I am somewhat doubtful third parties want to cut into their own PC sales.

Good consumer friendly move here - games able to be played in more places is always good.

I like this initiative, however also realise it is another step towards the demise of physical media.

That ain't going anywhere soon, they just give you a bonus for going digital in return for 100% of profits instead of money going to retailers for each sale.

Absolutely perfect for me! In the last few months I've turned into a half and half PC and Xbox gamer so being able to buy once and play on either platform is SO SO SO good!
