Nier: Automata has been officially unveiled by Square Enix and Platinum Games during Paris Games Week.
Originally announced during E3 2015 under the working title Nier: New Project, the first gameplay trailer presents Platinum's distinctive style of action gameplay. A Playstation Blog post covering the game's reveal highlights the fact that the game will retain the core action RPG elements of the first game, with plenty of mechanics to satisfy RPG fans.
The story of Nier: Automata sees mankind forced to leave Earth, forced to seek refuge on the moon after the appearance of mechanised invaders from another world. In order to fight back, a force of android warriors are created in a bid to retake the Earth. The game's protagonist is one such android by the name (and serial number) 2B. The post also points out that fans of the first game will notice certain characters and locations from the original Nier, with a link between the two.
Restating some of the information from New Project's original announcement, the post also points to the key creative team who made Nier returning to work on Automata. These include Yoko Taro, creative director, Yosuke Saito as producer, composer Keiichi Okabe, and character designs by Akihiko Yoshida, who are working alongside developers Platinum Games.
Nier: Automata is stated to be in early development, and as such there are no details on when it will launch for Playstation 4.
