Destiny Expansion: The Taken King Trailer and Details Revealed

Runtime: 2:30    Author: Destinygame    Category: Trailers

The Taken King, a massive expansion for Bungie's console online shooter, Destiny, was officially announced at the Playstation E3 Press Conference today, along with a launch date of September 15, 2015 (for New Zealand and North America) for the Xbox One, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3. With powerful new abilities, a new campaign, plenty of activities and rewards being added to the title, and more exclusive content for people playing on the Playstation consoles, this looks to be one of the largest updates to date.

Come September, Guardians will be able to take on a new enemy that has come seeking revenge. From the official Destiny page regarding the expansion, "A dark shadow has fallen over our worlds. Oryx, The Taken King, is hell-bent on vengeance and is raising an army of corrupted “Taken” forces by manipulating the Darkness itself. You must find a way into his impenetrable Dreadnaught ship to defeat The Taken King before he and his dark army consume our civilization and bring our solar system to ruin."

Accompanying the new story campaign and quests, the new content looks set to include new Strikes, Crucible maps, weapons, armor, gear, a new Raid, and most importantly, brand new Guardian subclasses. These suclasses include a solar power for the Titans called Sunbreaker, an Arc power for Warlocks titled Stormcaller, and a Void power for Hunters with the name of Nightstalker.

Details from the site about these new abilities are as follow:

Titan
New Subclass: Sunbreaker
Incendiary siege engines of war, Sunbreaker Titans hammer and shatter their enemy's ranks from afar, raining cleansing fire down upon fortified defensive positions.

Warlock
New Subclass: Stormcaller
Stormcallers directly manipulate Arc energy, focusing body and mind to channel and chain the lightning. Their enemies are given fair warning - flee from battle, or face the storm.

Hunter
New Subclass: Nightstalker
All Hunters master the frontier, but none claim territory quite like a Nightstalker. Shadowshot binding may seem more merciful than gun or blade... until the feeding frenzy begins.

A new edition of Destiny will also be releasing when The Taken King launches. Destiny: The Taken King - Legendary Edition claims to be "perfect for new and existing Guardians that are ready to jump into the Destiny universe or continue to carve their legend in the stars."

The Legendary Edition includes the following:

  • The main Destiny game
  • Expansion I: The Dark Below
  • Expansion II: House of Wolves
  • The Taken King

By pre-ordering the digital collector's edition, you also receive The Taken King Weapons Pack, along with the standard bonus digital collector's content of three exotic guardian class items featuring XP bonuses, three class-specific emotes, and three armor shaders to customize every Guardian class.

Destiny: The Taken King - The Digital Collector's Edition is now available to pre-order on both the Xbox and Playstation digital stores for $129.95 NZD. As of writing this, the standard version of The Taken King is not yet available.

Destiny: The Taken King launches for the Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, and PS3 on September 15, 2015 (for NZ and NA according to the NZ Xbox and Playstation online stores).

Question I have is that with a 5 - 10 year plan for this game why a complete edition with only 3 expansions out???

Also if it's $79.95 why would anyone buy it??? That's more expensive than the season pass which gave you two expansions (although the first was average and the 2nd better but lacking a raid). That takes the total price tag for anyone who bought new basically $200.

I've found the complete edition is $129.95 (or $79.95 USD) and the the addon by itself doesn't have a Xbox price yet (via console anyway).

yeah im guessing it will be considered an "as of ow" complete edition, i guess for us early adopters we'd just wait for a stand alone DLC pack.... i guess

Yeah, not biting on that one. Especially for the second-rate peasant version.

Cheers, Destiny. It was nice while it lasted.

Holy crap that price tag. The game is starting to appear to be the game I was expecting at launch, for another $73 there is no way I'm diving back in any time soon.

Maybe in a couple years when the game is loaded with content and "complete edition 4" is down to $50 on sale I might be tempted. Plus IMO its pretty generous calling the Dark below and House of wolves expansions, at best they are DLC packs but wording it that way implies this version of the game will be MASSIVE.

This isnt the only game.
Destiny is just the first game and has 2 DLCs and its big expansion coming out, word is there might be 2 more DLC addons like CE and HoW to follow. Then Destiny 2 will come out. Each game I think Bungie said they plan to have a 2 year cycle. So the 10 year plan they signed on for is for multiple "games" , not just one with millions of addons and expansions.

This is definitely the end of my run with Destiny. Im not paying $70 odd bucks for effectively 1 raid and 3 new subclasses. Going from past DLCs you already know the story with be quick and poor, PVP maps meh, 1-2 new strikes meh.

Yeah this is hopefully the final nail in the coffin for me too and I'll be able to peel myself away from Destiny for good and start playing more Uncharted etc.

Christ it sounds like a P addiction!

The price for the DLC by itself is completely ridiculous. I'm so glad I managed to buy Destiny for $20 that way I can just sell the normal version and get the Taken King version with all the DLC, but for everyone that has been buying all the DLC's this is really unfair to them.

For what it's worth, if you have a US PSN account, it's a whole $10 cheaper to buy the DLC from there. This really should be priced better to attract all of those people (like myself) that gave up on the game due to it being a snoozefest. It's a pity as the reviews all sound pretty favourable, but not 2/3 of a full new game favourable.
