Auckland-based developer Data Smugglers have released a trailer for their ambitious strategy game Ironfell. The video (above), subtitled The Herring Sea, showcases the title's unique aesthetic and Massively Multiplayer Online Real Time Strategy (MMORTS) gameplay.
The title is browser based, with an Android version planned, and completely free to play. David Colquhoun, Data Smugglers' Technical Director, explained the game's business model on his blog: Business Model: Give away everything for free.
"This almost the opposite of farmville’s evil business model," David explained, "they give you the basics for free, but you have to pay real money to get the Flamingos. Ironfell lets you have everything for free, and if you want to give me money, you can, and thankyou!"
Ironfell has generated just $582 in revenue for Data Smugglers, while racking up some $11,604 in costs - excluding the 10 months (to date) David has put into the game's development. If you're keen to have a go, and maybe contribute toward's the game's hosting costs, you can check out Ironfell here.
