Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

I am a big fan of the 1st 3 games and played them to death, In particular, Resident Evil 2 is my favourite game of all time. I was interested in this new title 7 but was skeptical about having human enemies in the game, and even after playing the inital demo, I still wasn't sold. But after seeing some reviews and artciles, I had to try it out and was glad I did. I have completed it in 8 hours on Normal, then a speedrun in 2 hours and 55 minutes on Easy and am dying to play it through again on Madhouse

Resident Evil 7 is the 1st main game in the series to be in 1st person perspective, which means it forces you to see everything through Ethan's eyes. There are moments in this game that had me genuinely shocked and had me at a stand still with my jaw wide open ( Some of these moments are very early on in the game too)

The atmosphere in the game is great, and you always have a feeling of unease as you creep around the house, never knowing what to expect around the next turn. The lighting also really helps to play a part in this, and is really well done.

The inventory is back so you have to manage your resources (ammo and health can be created now through chemical packs). You will find yourself struggling to decide which items to take with you ( Although you can upgrade your slots via backpack upgrades ) Should you have taken the shotgun over the grenade launcher? These are the question the game asks of you.

Once you complete the game you are rewarded with some nice unlockable, which are handy on subsequent playthroughs. The story is nicely tied up with a small surprise at the end though I was left slightly disappointed, and I felt that the last half of the game was nowhere near the quality of the first half, but maybe that's just me.

The game itself feels like it harkens back to the first game, but in first person mode. You never feel safe, no matter how much ammo you have. Capcom have smashed the atmosphere in this game, and am happy that they have returned to their true survival horror roots again.

Good to see a review from a fan that knows what the good RE games are! It's a fantastic game right? Have you played it in VR? That takes it to a whole different level. Like you, a few parts had me genuinely shocked, and I'm not easily shaken when it comes to horror (cop meets Jack's shovel for example). Good review!

Hey Nick,

Thanks, appreciate the comment :) I haven't been lucky enough ( or unlucky haha) to play it in VR, but I hear that's the best way to experience the game.

I agree with your review man. Not perfect but definitely the best since the early days. I love the originals too with the remakes on GameCube being my favourites. I didn't even play any since RE4 due to the more action orientated approach but this one hooked me hard with their new direction and I couldn't resist..

I'm currently on a madhouse play through and some parts are legit fricken hard but I love the challenge. Survival Horror games are by far my favourite types of game.

Hey, glad to hear you like the review :) Yeah, I played 4, and while good, was too much of a departure from the other Resident Evil games that I grew up with. 5 and 6 were terrible in my opinion.

Nice, I'm going to start my Madhouse run on the weekend. Luckily I've speedrun the game, so I can have the circular saw :D

Yup circular saw is a must. I'm half way through my madhouse run and it would be suicide without it.
