Have EA turned a new leaf?

Published Thursday 6 Nov 2008 3:52pm | 19

After renting and completing Dead Space something occured to me. EA made this game. To be more specific, EA Redwood Shores made this game. Not some random developer they bought out. Dead Space is actually good. People may bitch about it's linearality but it's be hard to get a scary atmosphere if you could just turn and flee in any old direction. The whole "Strategic Dismemberment" was so satisfying. I Loved blasting off Limbs. But anyway this isn't a review.

EA have had a somewhat disreputable stance in the video game industry. Accused of re-hashing and making bad quality games by many people. This has come to known as one of gamings many truths. But recently, it seems, EA have actually decided to start making games that aren't just random sequels or ripoffs. (see SSX, NFS, The Sims, every EA sports game)

But after Playing Dead Space i realised that EA still make mass loads of utter shite. But Yes they've made a good game. I'm hoping this trend will continue with the forthcoming release, Mirror's Edge. Although this is being developed by DICE which are a wholly owned subsidary of EA.

They've had a few shaky starts with this new leaf, such as Army of Two, Skate and the new Facebreaker But they've also made a few good ones such as Skate, Red Alert 3, and now of course Dead Space

John Ricctiello, EA's Chief Exectutive, has stated that the lack of innovation in the industry, which EA had a large hand in, has caused EA as a whole to look at creating new IP's. Well i say good on ya EA. It's good to see now that Activendi is bigger than you, you've decided that making good games accompanied to making a whole load of crap is a better way to make money than just making a whole load of crap.
 Great Stuff Brad

The demo for Mirror's Edge is very good but it takes a bit to get used to the controls.

A bit like a blog I was going to write, but I think that EA have stepped up big time. All the sports games bar NBA '09 have done very well, the new IP's Mirrors Edge, Dead Space etc have brought a new lease on EA's life.

Army of Two has some good concepts in it though... such as tampons for loading screens.

Dead space aint that great, generic, rip-off artist based mediocrity in a box...

But good blog mate.

Yeah some games are really hard to play which is pretty good taken the amount of time to finish defeating a certain something.

I haven't minded the NFS games, but lately they ARE becoming repetitive, have to look at undercover though, surely they must have tries something different, and why not have something where you can design your own bodykit? rather than just picking the one you like best, lol

I used to enjoy playing NFS & sometimes it's nice to have a wander down memory lane, however i saw some good reviews on Juiced2 & invested some pinga's(maori slang) & havent looked back since
