Be honest, who hasn’t been involved in a “who would win…” debate. Whether you’ve wanted to know the outcome of Superman vs Batman or Doomsday vs Luthor, finally there is a medium with which to get (some) closure.
Injustice: Gods Among Us pits the greatest heroes in the DC universe against one and other in an epic battle royalé. The game play is fundamentally in line with other One on One fighting games, there is a mix of story modes, ladder style battles and training/challenge modes. This shouldn’t be surprising given the credentials of developer Nether Realm. However, what sets Injustice apart from the crowd is the sheer slickness of the game.
Firstly is the stable of characters, all the DC favorites are present, and the time and detail gone into developing their moves, fighting styles and special powers is evident. Each character has a unique feel and style of play that embodies the spirit of the character. Superman has strong, short powerful combos while Batman has fast chaining combinations and counters. The super powers are also a great addition; Aquaman can use the water of life to break combos while Flash slows down time.
Level design is also another big plus for this game; each level has unique interactive attacks. This goes beyond simply smashing objects on your opponent, for example in the Bat Cave you can activate the batmobiles missiles and rain down hell while in Atlantis you break open the window to flood the level.
However, for me what really sets this game apart is the story mode. Ordinarily this is not the strong point of one on one fighting games. Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter simply involves a bunch of guys and girls in a fight for no particular reason. The stories in these games are paper thin and level progression is simply by way of ‘moving up the ladder’.
In comparison, Injustice puts you in the drivers seat of the next Justice League movie. The story of injustice is essentially a remake of the Justice Lords story line and the game plays like an interactive movie. There game cuts between movies, which carry the story, and fighting as the members of the Justice League.
Overall, Injustice is a great gaming experience that delivers on all levels. Highly recommended!
