Legacy of The Void (LOTV) is the third and final installment of StarCraft II which is focused on the Protoss race. There is definitely a lot to like about this game, and tweak to the gamep lay and new features have made this the most accessible for newer and casual players.
LOTV brings about an end to the StarCraft I/II story, with all three races uniting to overcome a new more sinister enemy - revealed at the end of the Heart of the Swam to be the sinister Xel’Naga led by the mysterious Amon.
In contrast to the plots of StarCraft 1 and StarCraft II Wings/HOTS, which were driven by the development of characters with depth, personality and their own particular motives, the plot is now a pretty straight forward case of the good guys vs evil space demons. While it was good to get closure, the story is probably the weakest aspect of LOTV.
Like its predecessors, LOTV adds new units and abilities both to single and multi-player, and focuses predominantly on the Protoss for the duration of the campaign. The campaign missions are designed well, with enough variety to keep things fresh even for seasoned players. And as with previous games, you can earn upgrades to create variations to your army that meet your play style.
One thing I liked about the new campaign was that it felt harder than HOTS. I’m not sure if this is because I prefer Zerg over Protoss, but either way I found the single player game play more challenging than previous installments, especially at the later levels.
Personally I liked the changes that have been made to multiplayer mode. I’m a casual RTS gamer and I always found it pretty challenging to get into StarCraft’s highly competitive multiplayer scene. LOTV has made some minor tweaks to the game play and added new modes to make it more accessible. There is less micromanagement to do plus there is a new co-op mode which introduces team play to RTS gaming. Co-op missions are great fun, but challenging and engaging at the same time. It’s also a great way to team up with your friends and let more casual players (like me) play alongside rather than against my more hard core mates.
Overall I thought this was an excellent final game in the trilogy. The story is a bit dull at times but the game play and multiplayer modes more than make up for this. Highly recommended for even casual RTS gamers.
