Trust your Guts? I shouldn't of trusted my guts to buy this game!
So this review Im about to do is focused mainly on the Multiplayer aspects of this game.
As a big Gears fan, as soon as I heard of this I was excited that I went to pre-order the game about a month before its release, a few days before the game's release I received a Demo key for Judgement's new online game-mode OverRun, which pits 5 COG members against 5 members of the Locust Horde. After a few matches on the demo I was actually quite pleased with this new mode and the new aspect of competitive Multiplayer that it brang to the table by implementing the "Old School"
classed based combat for the COG players.
So I get the game on release day, I'm cruising through the menus and......wait!.....wait a minute there's only two Multiplayer options on the main menu. SURVIVAL AND VERSUS. WHERE THE F!!$#$#$#% is HORDE AND BEAST???? How very disappointing it was when i was unable to find these game-modes. Em assuming that the new SURVIVAL mode has replaced these modes and maybe later down the line Epic might try milk us with Horde and Beast modes as DLC.
Okay so lets move onto the game mechanics and features of Multiplayer
So this time round when playing competitive Multiplayer modes in Versus, players are now only allowed to equip one Primary weapon, that's right you can no longer now spawn into the game with a Rifle and Shotgun. This time round you pick one primary weapon with your secondary being a Snub Pistol, and now this time round players now have the opportunity to select their equipped grenade when they spawn into the game, which I think is great as now all players get to have a grenade and forces players to do other things in online matches besides everyone trying to run to get to a grenade spawn and then camping that spawn with a grenade,Now there's two points of views when it comes to the new load-out system. On one point this requires players to pick the right type of gun for the right type of map. e.g Gnasher Shotgun for close quarters combat or the Lancer or the new rifle the Markza for longer range combat, however from the other standpoint this becomes a very "Cheap" aspect to the game, players now miss out on that unique Gears of War contested action where players would battle out with their lancers or Hammerbursts then switch to shotties to try finish each other off once and for all, now its more "OverRun" with players exploiting the use of Double Barrel Shotguns, their was many moments when I would be in a contested assault with somebody who had a Double Barrel equipped but they would try draw me to them by staying in cover hoping that I would I would eventually run out of Lancer ammo so they could "Rush" me or that I would try contest with a Lancer at close range whilst they are around a corner giving them the advantage to just blind fire or cover fire with their double barrel and Insta-Kill me. Now see if this was Gears 3 I would of had the opportunity (So would of the other player) to have a contested shoot out with our Lancers then gradually start close quarters contested shooting with a shottie, but now it just feels more slowed pace as now you have to play "Waiting Games" with the enemy or try your luck to rush in with a Chainsaw which 99% of the time doesn't end in your favor. Another very disappointing feature that they took out of Versus Multiplayer is the Bleed Out/Down But Not Out mechanism aspect of the game, I know everyone hated it in Gears 2 and 3 where you would down a player from long range then they would crawl away and then later get back up but I enjoyed this because it encouraged team work in the game and forced players to stay close in certain situations when the going got tough, now in Judgement as soon as you hit your damage limit, your dead, your body just rag dolls to the floor, now longer can you try crawl away as a last ditch effort to survive or Martydom yourself before players are able to execute you, and speaking of executions, they're GONE! Since the Bleed Out aspect is gone and players instantly die, players dont get the chance to disrespect the other players and preform the cool chainsaw or ground and pound executions we came to all know and love from Gears 2 and 3. Also Game Modes like Annex and King of the Hill are not currently present in the game. And now its not even a COG VS Locust battle anymore, In Versus Multiplayer the Locust team has been removed now more the more traditional "Red VS Blue" theme and now its just COG VS COG, which really deteriorates from the overall experience of the game, I mean seriously, having 9 players running around as Cole Train (And yes this really did happen to me today) is just completely stupid.
Survival Mode... it's just a big letdown, its basicly OveRun mode but instead of playing against Human controlled Locust players, you play against the AI (Bots)
so its really not worth writing about.
"However many of these features still remain in Survival Mode, but these features were built for competitive multiplayer and i believe Epic and People Can Fly made a poor decision to remove these. Who knows, maybe down the line Epic may release new playlists that will reintroduce these features."
The only positives I really gained from Multiplayer were that the maps have good layout structure and there is a good mixture of close quarter maps, all rounder maps and long range maps and the interactivity that some of the maps have, for example in one map players have the option to take a ride in a Helicopter decked out with a mini gun and reign down on the players below, since the helicopter hovers around the map players are also able to jump off at certain times in the ride to gain access to other parts of the map and flank the enemy. The spawning system seems to be working well and I haven't witnessed being spawn killed...yet, and its easier this time round to kill players, (In previous Gears it took quite a few clips to even fully damage and kill a player) this time round with a few good placed hits with a Lancer or 2 or 3 shells from a Gnasher shottie to kill someone it makes the game more enjoyable and more fast paced. EPIC have also included a new feature called Prizeboxes where players earn a random reward depending on there performance in Multiplayer, the rewards vary from weapon skins, Armour skins or EXP rewards.
So, it;ts come to that time.... Should you buy Gears of War Judgement???
If your a big gears fan then yes but wait till the price goes down, however be prepared there will be some major disappointments for you. If your a new comer to the series I suggest you just take a miss on Judgement and try other games in the series first as they are much better. And for the gamers who ask. Is it better than Gears 3??? The answer is HELL NO!
