SingStar: Queen

Well, I’ve known this one was coming for some time, but even so, it’s a lot of fun for Queen fans. I think I was born knowing the lyrics to all their songs, but I’ll attempt to be at least partly impartial here.

If you’re a longtime SingStar fanatic, you’ll know the drill by now: this is a collection of 25 Queen songs (for the PS3 at least – more on that in a sec), some of which were already released on the SingStore, and some of which are brand new. Beyond a Queen-themed wallpaper and background music, not much else is new – the gameplay and modes remain unchanged, as you’d expect.

So, are you a Queen fan? If not, you may as well stop reading now. But if you’re partial to a bit of Bohemian Rhapsody, you’ll find a lot of songs that are absurdly fun to blast out when you’ve got friends around – and ideally, if you’re of drinking age, when sobriety is nowhere to be found.

A standout for me is Under Pressure, which is equal parts fun and horrible to listen to when people are trying to hit the high notes. Hammer to Fall, We Are the Champions, Bo Rap, and Don’t Stop Me Now are also good times – although really, I enjoyed every song on here, even You’re My Best Friend. It’s worth repeating again that the mileage you get out of this game will depend on how obsessed you and your mates are with Queen.

One slightly sour note is that the PlayStation 2 version only comes with 20 songs. You’ll be missing out on the aural delights of Hammer to Fall, A Kind of Magic, Radio Ga Ga, The Show Must Go On, and Killer Queen. Bit of a shame, really, and I can’t think of a good reason why they did this. It’s not like there wasn’t room on the disc – is it simply licensing laziness on the part of Sony?

So if you’re a Queen fan and a SingStar fan, go buy this game – it’s way better than SingStar Abba, but I only say that because Abba causes me to wince. If you can, grab the PS3 version. Here’s the full tracklist:

1. A Kind of Magic
2. Another One Bites The Dust
3. Bicycle Race
4. Bohemian Rhapsody
5. Breakthru
6. Crazy Little Thing Called Love
7. Don’t Stop Me Now
8. Fat Bottomed Girls
9. Hammer to Fall
10. I Want It All
11. I Want To Break Free
12. Innuendo
13. Killer Queen
14. One Vision
15. Play The Game
16. Radio Ga Ga
17. Somebody to Love
18. The Show Must Go On
19. These Are The Days Of Our Lives
20. Tie Your Mother Down
21. Under Pressure
22. We Are The Champions
23. We Will Rock You
24. Who Wants To Live Forever
25. You’re My Best Friend

"Sheer awesomeness - for Queen fans, at least. "

This would be awesome if I was still drinking. Only ever played Singstar when totally trolleyed. So many good songs on that track list.

So much for trophies for each game released from Feb 2009 onward, this game doesn't even have trophies. Shame because I would have brought it without a doubt if it had trophies.
