The Maw

Often when you combine two great things, the results are far from expected. Two rights doesn’t make a super right. How is it then that a game that combines cuteness and eating is actually worthwhile? Read on to find out.

The Maw is a game with more meat on it than many Live titles. What makes The Maw so good is that it isn’t a game we have played before; it’s an original 3d platform game. One of the best things about Xbox Live is that it gives independent game developers a platform from which to shine.

Sure, it may be unfair to compare The Maw to classics like Banjo or Super Mario, but The Maw isn’t technically great. It has some control and clipping issues and it’s not the biggest game ever created. What The Maw has in spades however is personality.

The object of the game is to guide your Maw (blob) through the game's levels, eating everything in your path. The more he eats, the bigger he gets. There’s just one problem: your pet blob is incredibly stupid, leaving you to do all the legwork.

Armed with an electronic plasma leash thing, you can grab objects, characters and Maw himself, dragging items from here to there. You can also throw items, lobbing them across the level or straight into the mighty jaws of Maw. Because many of the creatures you encounter are so cute, this is a great laugh. There are many places you can’t get to with Maw, so you often have to go off by yourself, this and moving items make up most of the puzzles.

The puzzles are usually pretty light and each level will take up about 15 minutes of your time. You can’t die in this game and the controls are fairly straightforward. The Maw is a fun and amusing distraction for adults, but would be a fantastic title to download if you have some younger gamers in your abode.

With highly polished graphics and music which is unlikely but suits the game to a tea, The Maw certainly is a lot more polished than your average Live title. The levels themselves are a little plain, but some of the animations and scenarios you come across keep you wondering what’s around the next corner.

The Maw is worth a download if you want a relaxing light hearted game while you take a break from Halo, or as mentioned before, you need a game to keep the kids entertained over the weekend.

"Entertaining for a good few hours."

Yeah, the music is cool. There's also a cool Kill Bill reference in the begining, you know the weird siren/flashing red light thing? I think that's Kill Bill....are there anymore of these? I only played the trial, which was awseme!
