Ongoing payments for MMOG

Maybe I'm to old school to realise the benefit of continually having to pay a monthly subscription to play these MMOG.  I mean the customer has already forked out truck loads for the game and then they are expected to paid ongoing subs to retain the right to play the game.

Gone are the days of gaming online for free with your mates.  Maybe in the future there won't even be single player versions available, everything will be online and chargeable.

I mean it's got to the point where a group of mates that want to have a LAN session can't do so, in some cases the game needs to be created via the Net so your mates can join it.

The local LAN partys where a mismash of LAN cables dangerously criss-crossing across the floor are dying.

These days creating a gaming community comes at a cost.  Shame really.

I don't think he cost is very high. Personally I have saved money overall by paying MMO subscriptions - otherwise I would buy more new games (which cost a lot more).

"Gone are the days of gaming online for free with your mates." Not true. Diablo 1 & 2 are both free-to-play online and I have no doubt Diablo 3 will also have free online play.

MMORPG is another genre altogether and they co-exist along side the classic Western RPG. I think the main appeal of MMOs is that there are thousands of users in game, instead of just 16 players, as you would get in a classic rpg with free online play.

Funny thing is WoW has put some interest back in the classic RPGs; when people hear Blizzard they think WoW, and here comes a new game from the makers of WoW: Diablo 3. In turn this might revitalize the classic market.
