How limited is a 'limited edition' anything?

Do people flock to products that are marketed as 'limited edition'?

I think there should be a law that states, anything that it marketed as 'Limited Edition' should in fact be a limited edition. The packaging should have a mandatory number of how many there are in the limited edition e.g. there are X of X of this edition of the game.

Is it just marketing trickery that adds more value to something that has no extra value. Sure you might get some extra in game content, maybe a figurine or t-shirt, but I see that as just some extras you get with that bundle, which isn't really limited edition per say.

Just surfing the 'Net' we find that a lot of games are now 'Collectors Edition' or 'Signature Edition' etc and the use of the term 'limited edition' is not as common. So maybe this has been addressed and game companies have in the past been taken to task about using the term 'Limited Edition'?

You can still find listed 'Limited Edition' games online and they seem to be affordable if they are truly limited editions. For example if the 1TB GT Sport Limited Edition Playstation 4 Console, which goes on sale in Oct 2017 in NZ, is this truly a limited edition, if so how many of them are there? Surely even if it said there are 100,000 versions workwide wide that would give the product a 'Limited Edition' tag.

Have I got the 'Limited Edition' meaning totally wrong? Is it not even a number of what is limited? If it is I'm not sure I understand what 'Limited Edition really means in the gaming world.

Last question, do we care? Are there people out there who buy these limited edition games for the possible future investment stand point or are there those people who just buy the products for the content and additional inclusive 'hard-copy' products that come with the title?

It would be great for someone out there to clarify this, and help me with my understanding.

It is false advertising  to say something is 'limited' and not back that up with how many it's limited too?

Interesting thoughts Ranger.

I doubt that limited edition is probably that well policed, like health food claims that are vaguely true/ kind of true but deceptive.

Generally limited edition consoles are limited and stop being sold, so presumably they plan to make x number, but x number can be high.

HZD's collectors edition was so limited I couldn't get one pre-release day so limited does mean limited.

It would be interesting of law forced them to say howlikited an edition was but I doubt that's high up on any lists.

Good blog post though. You should get involved in the forums!

Hi drunk_monk, thanks for your feedback! I think you're right, the policing of it may be difficult, but in saying that, the 'limited editions' are generally announced months in advance of the actual release. So may be policing it is probably not to hard. As you day though, people probably have better and higher priorities on their lists.

Thanks for your vote of confidence re my blog post. I do like to post on NZG, as the community seems very friendly and positive. For me it's about finding an interesting topic to blog about, rather than just posting anything random. I'll try and post more in the near future. Cheers drunk_monk!

True. How limited is limited, really? Only being released in a specific region, or just a set number. As has been said, that number can be high. A lot of the games these days come as Limited Edition or Day One edition, and generally only add cosmetic effects in the game (At least all of the ones I've bought lately)

I haven't bought a Collectors Edition of a game since Bayonetta on PS3 (Came with a sweet gun and stand, which I regret selling now) and the editions that are released these days are usually not on par with how they used to be.

Hi Unfathomable-Ruination, thanks for your response. Totally agree that the Collectors Editions etc are getting a little stingy or are extremely over=priced. On the odd occasions however you do see the 'Limited Editions' on the sale tables when doing the rounds at the mall. Being a 'Mall rat' is a whole new topic all together!
