Board gaming, get off that PC or console!

When was the last time you played a board game? I'm not talking about Monopoly or The Game of Life, I mean something like Talisman or Munchkin.

Wil Wheaton (of Star Trek, TNG fame) hosts an online web show called Table Top, the show is a great way to see a game in action. Not only does he and his guests show how the game is played but also hope much fun they are.  No need to understand all the rules as they provide a quick break-down of how to play.

Table top gaming is a big industry but there are only a few that make it to the big time. These days you can custom design your own 'hard copy' of a game. There are sites which can make the board, the cards and even custom dice.  They promote the idea of making custom games for the family, for your mates and pretty much anyone who may like your game.

The classic Dungeons and Dragons maybe the ultimate adventure board game. With a skilled Dungeon Master (DM) and some comedic players its guaranteed to be a fun long night / long weekend!

Chris Perkins (from Wizards of the Coast) and the players of 'Acquisitions Incorporated' make up a party of adventurers that include a Cleric (and CEO of Acquisitions Incorporated), Omin Dran, played by Jerry Holkins, Dwarven fighter, Binwin Bronzebottom played by Scott Kurtz, a Human Wizard, Jim Darkmagic, played by Mike Krahulik and finally by no means least Aeofel Elhromane (otherwise not known as Al) an Eladrin avenger played by Wil Wheaton.

The players that make up the bulk of the party are from Penny Arcade (i.e. Jerry, Mike and Scott) and complement Wil and Chris very well to bring you an entertaining adult rated adventure via podcasts and live YouTube D&D adventures.

I haven't played a good D&D game in years, a lot of years, but when you see these 'professional' D&D players and DM bring the game alive it inspires you to want to start up a D&D adventure of your own!

I encourage you to first listen to the podcasts and then watch the YT videos (this is the first part of the series, starting back in 2010), as the podcasts give you an insight into all the characters, how they evolve and become the comical party of bumbling adventures that they are.

Back to the topic, there are also table top war games of strategy and overwhelming armies of very detailed, well painted miniatures which is a whole new article, but still exist in well established retail gaming stores.

So when was the last time you played a board game? It's about that time now.

Hi ByrdmanNZ, I've watched all the PAX vid's so many times, they are awesome! Listening the podcasts, pre the YT vid's gives you the real origins of how the characters were created!

The last time I played a board game was last week, Lord of the Rings version of Risk. I also have one of the original D&D Adventure board game, all the pieces are still intact and haven't been removed from their cut out paper, lol. It's been years since I last played D&D... 25 years in fact. Many happy memories and game weekends.

Hi dvant1, the last time I played a D&D game was when I was at high school! My mates (fellow adventurers) joined the chess club so we could use the room and played D&D, and also back then, Traveller, a space role playing game.

Thanks for your comment.

A little over 20 years since I played a game of D & D anywhere but on PC or console but I used to love getting together with 3 - 5 mates and doing a good session (gaming that is honest lol) now though I don't play a lot of board games and generally the ones I do play are on Xbox anyway.

I am partial to a game of Risk whenever the opportunity arises. But without a board or anyone to play with anymore it's not that often.
