AT A GLANCE
| The Good: Dragon Ball fighting games rock. | "A new story arc based on Future Trucks." |
| The Bad: Same old characters, new story. | |
| The Ugly: The “over nine thousand” meme. |
To say there are more than enough Dragon Ball Z games available to the average fan would be an understatement. Now Namco Bandai is adding another to the ever-growing pile. Fortunately, Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai Another Road improves on the previous installment with new moves and a fresh story. Another Road is the follow-up to the PSP fighter Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai. It brings everything that makes the PS2 franchise great to the small screen, so fans can play with their favorite characters anywhere.
As the subtitle Another Road suggests, this latest title features a new story arc based on Future Trucks’ fight against Majin Buu, and includes many characters from the Dragon Ball movies and series. Additionally, the story mode will include a new leveling system, to keep it more true to the traditional Dragon Ball Z pointless ‘training’ episodes.
The main advantage this game will carry over the previous PSP title is its in-game transformations - similar the ones in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 on PS2 and Wii – and a new, adjustable camera. As would be expected, Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai Another Road will also feature the usual Arcade, Versus, and Practice modes, as well as Wi-fi support for online matches.
Fans of the series will know what to expect from this game: long-ranged battles interspersed with a few melee moments, spectacular Ki attacks, and characters from every orifice of the Dragon Ball universe. As with the other Dragon Ball titles, whether you pick this up or not is down to not having played a modern Dragon Ball Z game, more specifically a Budokai Tenkaichi title before. If you have played Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and want a handheld version, it will be worth a look.
