AT A GLANCE

The Good: An addictive puzzle game. "Another puzzler to keep us awake at night."
The Bad: Playing until five in the morning.
The Ugly: Playing for two days straight.

Just when you had gotten over your Lumines addiction, here comes another puzzler to keep you awake at night. Gunpey, developed by Q entertainment and published by Namco Bandai, is the latest block-connecting puzzle game for DS and PSP. Sure, it’s the same old formula invented by Tetris and copied by almost every puzzle game since to varying degrees, but it works.

Of course, that isn’t to say they’re all straight Tetris clones: every good puzzle game has its own distinctive gameplay that sets it apart from the rest. Although players will still be matching rows of panels, what separates Gunpey from the rest is that the panels will have a line spanning rows of five panels. Players will flip panels to make the line bottom match up, creating zigzag patterns to eliminate the rows to prevent them from reaching the top.

Gunpey is in development for DS and PSP, and both versions will feature head-to-head play, as well as a few exclusive modes to each version. On the DS for example, gamers will be able to use special attacks such as No Touching against their opponent, which disables their opponent’s touch screen temporarily to hinder their progress; while PSP owners will have a double skin mode, with up to 40 skins to mix and match. Both versions will be incredibly addictive and keep players awake until 3am in the morning, trying to get that one last level in before going to sleep.
