They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.
But often the sleeve cover of a game can be the deciding factor in the cut-throat market of gaming.
Angus rounds up some of the worst cases of terrible box-art that have adorned video games over the past few decades.
Which ones have made the list? Read on to find out.

Animal Soccer World (PlayStation 2)
To be totally honest I’m not sure these animals are actually playing soccer at all. Firstly the lion appears to be kicking that poor gorilla really hard in his nether regions and thoroughly enjoying himself.
And I’d really rather not know what the bear and the pig are doing down the bottom there. Whatever it is the bird referee seems to object. But the scary Rhino looks like he’s about to join in at any moment.
Perhaps it should have been titled Animal Orgy World. Keep the 3+ kids rating as well, of course. At least it would be educational… sort of.

Black Belt (SEGA Master System)
The SEGA Master System was pretty famous for terrible box-art. The entire series featured a stunningly modern mathematical grid paper texture behind every single design and a serif typeface that told you nothing about the game. The only area that artists could use to sell the game was the bottom left-hand corner.
So what do they decide to do? They encapsulate Black Belt’s intense violent beat 'em up gameplay by showing a foot that looks like it belongs in an Athlete’s Foot cream advert.
Runner up in the terrible SEGA Master System cover category would have to be Pro-Wrestling which featured a cartoon of a headless wrestler… cradling his own head.

Pac-Man (Atari 400/800)
Either the illustrator behind this 1982 cover of Pac-Man had never played the game before, or they simply decided to take complete artistic license with it. Turning the maze into a castle setting is one thing, but giving Pac-Man buck teeth and a serious case of macrocephaly is another altogether.
His abnormally large cranium is only compacted by his stick-like body and bulge-heavy short shorts. Why is Pac-Man wearing a singlet of himself? I also love the way the artist managed to include Grimace from MacDonald’s coming around the corner on the right there.
Of course this cover could be an extremely clever explanation for Pac-Man’s dilemma. He’s terribly underweight and needs to stuff his mouth with as many floating cookies as possible. Grimace and his pals are manifestations of his psychological eating-disorder that haunt his trapped subconscious (ie: the castle-like maze). More likely though, the artist was just on drugs.

lol these covers made me crack up.
My favourite cover out of the list has to be "Street Warrior". If you put a goatee on them they'll both look like former pro-wrestler Goldberg lol.

Haha. Some classic examples in there Angus! Master System always had such "dry" covers. I remember Fantasy Zone just having the little pod spaceship in that bottom left corner.
I love that the upcoming Mega Man Universe game will reference that awful NES cover version of Mega Man. Playable character? I HOPE SO!

I'd say that is one of the best box arts ever. Honourable mentions should be that DS game with the gentlemanly part on the cover, Dragon Ball DS (With some cat thing looking up the girls skirt) or crackdown on the Megadrive.

Dangerous comment, flaming really. Check the definition of Plagiarism before making such bold accusations, perhaps a similar article has been done before but that is NOT plagiarism. Fantastic article keep it rolling, it's so funny to see the old cover art which bears little to no relation to the game on the cartridge, wonder how many good games were passed over due to such miserable cover representation, really shows how much our industry has matured, until you see that Microsoft Tiger

Is that lion on animal soccer the king from Robbin Hood?
haha, I lol'd and lol'd :-D Ahh the old days where you couldn't just put the in-game graphics on the cover?! Oh no, you had to invent some hyper realised depiction of what the blocks and blips might look like in real life?! Now though, the abstractions that are the in-game graphics are incredibly iconic and the monstrosities that adorned their box art are only remembered to be made fun of! Case in point, the Space Invaders box art from the 2600 version didn't feature the incredibly cool and now iconic Space Invaders sprites which are now made into jewellery, tattoos, furniture and urban street art to name just a few. Instead it had three incredibly generic looking UFO's flying over some mountains?!
That's quite possibly the best article I've read on here. The first one was definitely the best. It's completely filthy. You forgot to mention the evil elephant in the background on the left looking sh*tty about being left out of all the fun. Also that relatively small hippo is doing something nasty to the worthog who is trying to get away from it quick smart.
It has to be said that gaming is now in a sad place. I can't find a good game + colouring book combo anywhere.

Awesome article man - not only are the abominable images entertaining in their own right but your commentary of their (many) failings is sublime. Love your work :D

I am not going to lie, I was laughing all through that!
The "Animal Soccer World" cover definitely features the animals from "Bed Knobs and Broomsticks". Professor Browne (played by the father from "Mary Poppins) refs a game of soccer on the Island of Naboombu to try and get the King's (the Lion's) medallion, which has the Subsitituary Locomotion incantation inscribed on it. Favourite Childhood Movie.
