Elefunk is the latest puzzle title to hit PlayStation Store. Its concept is a bizarre twist on the genre; it takes Elephants and dumps them in a jungle full of flimsy bridges - and without your help the bridges will collapse if they so much as step foot on it.
This is where the puzzles come in. You have to reinforce the bridges with a variety of parts until you come up with something strong enough to support the elephant. Once you’ve finished reinforcing the bridge, you can push the start button to get the elephant moving. Although a case of trial and error, it’s addictive enough to keep you coming back for more. Should the bridge collapse, you are treated to watching the elephant either full to his death, or it will hold up some balloons and float away in an unrealistic fashion - although realism went out the window last dry-season.
There are four themes with six levels in each to play through. As you progress, the levels get harder - even in the second level it introduces some monkeys that jump up and down on the second bridge to weaken it. Once you master the bridges in the puzzle mode you can play through them in Time Attack Mode; it sports the same levels as puzzle mode, but this time around you’re trying to get the best time. However, you do have to unlock each level again, even if you have unlocked them in the other mode.
Elefunk also features a multiplayer mode that plays like Jenga. In this mode you and a friend remove parts of a platform holding up both players’ elephants. Whoever removes the last plank loses. In a sadistic twist, you can replay the death of the two elephants over and over, either to rub in your victory or laugh as the poor mammals plummet to their deaths – wholesome fun for the two players.
After you’ve played through the initial levels, Sony will have DLC available in the PlayStation Store. Unfortunately, at the time of writing the specifics hadn’t been announced.
Elefunk is a nice, addictive puzzle title with enough levels to make it worth the initial download.
