To say that SkyDiving, one of the latest titles for the PS3 available for download via the PSN store, is an unexplored genre would be a huge understatement. The only time I can remember playing a sky diving type game would probably be on my cell phone, so I was intrigued by this title, just for the sheer sake of seeing how a game like this would pan out on a console.

The concept is divided into two sections, with the first being formation diving. Here you are expected to twist and turn your on screen character to fit the specified position amidst a formation. Success then prompts another formation and so on. The aim is to achieve as many as possible before you reach the danger zone and have to activate your parachute.

The other mode is a solitary experience and ditches your three team mates and demands precision landing on a target for maximum points. Initially you have the opportunity for some freestyle twists and turns in the pursuit of bonuses before worrying about lining up the landing target, which you must hit as there is little room for error.

What makes these modes more annoying than they should be is the mediocre use of the Sixaxis controller. Swaying the controller forward, backward, left and right will move your character around the formation, which works reasonably well for the most part. However, spinning your character by way of rotating the Sixaxis left and right is very unforgiving, as it doesn’t seem to have a ‘zero’ point, making the aforementioned precision landings difficult.

The game is presented in a manner you’d expect for the price you pay for this game. The visuals are generally clean and bright, while the audio is made up of your generic menu music, and a series of beeps and tones when instructed to move or perform a certain action.

Unfortunately SkyDiving doesn’t hit the mark, but for the price it is certainly worth considering if you’re looking for something different.
