Iron Man

AT A GLANCE

"Well he sure isn’t here to get the creases out of your clothes…"
The Good: Awesome comic, awesome movie… awesome games?

The Bad: Awesome comic, awesome movie… Iron Man another cash cow?

The Ugly: Needing to chuck after a bender and not getting your iron mask off fast enough.

SEGA haven’t been licking their wounds or letting the grass grow under their feet since they stopped with the hardware and went to developing software more or less full time. They’re responsible for overseeing a number of developers working on Iron Man, a game being released for every platform and to tie in with the upcoming theatrical release of the movie.

Based on a Marvel comic, the license for Iron Man is being wrung out: between the comic, the movie, the games, merchandising and the appropriation of the old Black Sabbath track, there’s not a lot of space for any media-consumer currency to slip away.

In Iron Man you’ll take control of Tony Stark, high-flyer, wheeler and dealer, and soon-to-be battler of injustice. Forget Bruce Wayne’s lycra and cape. Forget Peter Parker’s (let’s face it) fetishistic rubber suit. When Tony Stark decides posteriors need to be kicked he gets down with the most masculine metal and materials of all – iron, fire… and charisma.

Regardless of platform, Iron Man will be an action/adventure, shoot ‘em up type deal, and will take advantage of each system’s unique features. Needless to say, you shouldn’t expect too many major differences between Xbox 360, PS3, PS2 (yeah, like I said – ka-ching) and PC. Even the PSP can probably be expected to be almost an exact replica. Where the developers will have a chance to show off some varying functionality (and bare in mind it’s not one developer covering the lot) will be the DS, but traditionally this kind of game hasn’t proved to be our little friend’s strong suit.

Expect to be able to fly, shoot, crush and otherwise wreak mayhem across the various levels, tied into a plot with links to the comic and the appearance of a number of baddies from the same. Of course, with market saturation like Iron Man is getting, you can imagine the relationships across the various media formats to be a little incestuous.

The media frenzy is reminiscent of the Transformers release, and trailers for the game and movie look equally deserving of our cash, eye-balls and red-eye gaming sessions, so here’s hoping it all comes together.
