AT A GLANCE
| The Good: Cool graphics, platform-based play, and a few mysteries revealed. | "R&C hit the PS3." |
| The Bad: It’s pretty, but is this another case of sequel-itis? | |
| The Ugly: Is anyone tired of Ratchet and Clank yet? |
The last Ratchet & Clank title, Deadlocked, released in 2005, was received with good reviews, but many players saw it as a move away from some of the earlier R&C titles that they knew and loved so well. The sidelining of Clank in particular was unforgivable!
It’s looking like the upcoming release of Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (number six in the series, if anyone is counting) is hoping to make amends. Not only is Clank back and ready for action, but Insomniac Games has gone back to the platform feel of the earlier titles. Combine that classic gameplay with all the new features the PS3 has to offer, and we’re talking about a potential hit.
From the news that’s been made available so far, Tools of Destruction’s going to be answering a lot of questions, with the storyline taking a trip down Ratchet’s memory lane as a mysterious baddie from his past manages to track him down and tries to make trouble. It’ll also reveal the history of the Lombaxes – so stay tuned.
Storyline aside, Tools of Destruction looks set to deliver on some of the more classic features of an R&S title. You can expect some seriously crazy weapons (such as the Tornado Launcher, controlled with the SIXAXIS controller, and the Groovitron, a grenade that looks like a disco ball that makes enemies start dancing). The game will also feature space travel, as well as space combat (though it’s rumoured that this has been given a complete makeover compared to previous titles). And it wouldn’t be a R&C game without the ability to turn your enemies into helpless animals. What’s more, Clank discovers he has some new powers (possibly charged up from all that sitting around in Deadlocked).
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction is slated for release in September this year. Start putting aside your pocket money for a PS3 now!
