AT A GLANCE
| The Good: Rich enviroments, as well as a fully functioning physics simulator. | "Resistance: Fall of Man looks to be packing some heat." |
| The Bad: The combination of survival horror and the military genre could prove to be a completely over-the-top experience. | |
| The Ugly: Those monsters! |
Formerly known as I-8, Resistance: Fall of Man is a first-person shooter from Insomniac. The game takes place in an alternate version of 1951 England: World War II never occurred; instead you're battling against fanatical monsters called chimera, with coils and tubes coming out of their backs.
By the time Resistance takes place, all of Europe has been overrun, and only some few members of the British military have survived to form a ragtag resistance movement. You'll play as Nathaniel Hale, the last remaining member of a US Rangers unit, who has since joined up with the British resistance.
Insomniac is notorious for the exotic weaponry of its Ratchet & Clank series, and Resistance will feature quite an interesting arsenal as well. Tagging bullets will allow you to direct your shots, even at enemies around corners! The 'Hedgehog' is a spiked grenade that hovers into the air and shoots needles very forcefully in all directions. And the 'Augur' fires energy shots through walls in a rapid-fire fashion, or (as its alternative mode of fire) surrounds the player with a protective shield for a short period of time.
Resistance will serve up a heavy survival-horror element along with its over-the-top military action. The game will also contain a number of what developer Ted Price refers to as 'hero moments'. What this basically means is that in most situations an enemy will come bearing down on an ally of yours, and you will need to make a split-second decision whether to save your comrade, and in return have him/her help your cause, or to keep yourself safe from harm.
Judging from screenshots and trailers, Resistance looks very good. But Insomniac's proprietary new engine is also doing a ton of physics simulation, meaning that explosions or collisions will have different impacts on different items -- something hardcore gamers, or just explosion fans, will be excited about, as no two explosions will be identical.
Confirmed as a PS3 launch title, Resistance: Fall of Man looks to be packing some heat, and could bring something truly different to the FPS genre. Keep it locked on NZGamer and we will be sure to bring you updates of the latest games as they come to hand.
