Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

AT A GLANCE

The Good: An improvement over the previous game "This looks familiar..."
The Bad: It's still a movie tie-in
The Ugly: Seems reworked, not reinvented

Everybody with at least fifteen years under their belt should be familiar with the animated cartoon 'Transformers'. Those unfortunate enough to miss the cartoon in its early days may then recognise the Transformers franchise from the blockbuster movie that was released a couple of years ago - cue “ARE YOU LADIESMAN217?!” In the near future the sequel to the 2007 movie will be released and to coincide with that Activison have enlisted a few developers to bring the franchise back into the gaming platforms of Transformers fans all over.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen seems to mimic the same playing style and concept as the previous game. Players will have set missions within open environments in which they can carve their own path to the target which works incredibly well for a Transformers related game. If a player wishes to transform from their combat form to their transport form that is now possible within a very small frame of time, so small that players can even use the momentum of their travel form to unleash a powerful attack while changing into combat state.

There are many playable characters in Revenge of the Fallen from both the Autobot and Decepticon sides, meaning that missions will differentiate between a good and bad side of the main story. This is the case for all platforms, apart from the Nintendo DS version, which will be divided into two games.

We can only hope that the game will be any good. Most games that tie in with film releases and franchises seem to be cheap and lacking in original ideas; hopefully Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen can bring some new tricks to the party. On the topic of original ideas, there are reports of a multiplayer versus mode making an appearance. The thought of a sixteen player team deathmatch between Autobots and Decepticons is a tantalizing one. Check back with us in the near future for a full review!

I'll be getting this just because I'm a big old Transformers geek from way back. It sounds like they've improved a lot from the original which was an atrocious game in almost every regard.

And hey, if it sucks again, I'll get my bucks back.

Really looking forward to the movie, though. Looks bloody awesome!

Hmm, doubt I'll bother with it. Movie looks awesome, but the game doesn't sound like my thing.

Rather buy the Movie than the game. At least I'll get my money's worth.
