AT A GLANCE
| The Good: Furthering the lifespan of such expensive controllers is a good thing! | "If the original expert mode didn’t wear out your controller, this will." |
| The Bad: How much the fight for perfection made my hands ache in the original. | |
| The Ugly: Kids thinking they can play ‘Ace of Spades’ after playing the original game. |
If there’s one game that’s hotter than Bob Saget in a walk-in furnace, it’s Guitar Hero. Earning rewards and praise left, right and centre from critics and gamers alike, the original proved popular enough to warrant a sequel. Whilst it would be easy, even acceptable, to just record new songs into the original template ala Singstar, Harmonix actually have some new ideas for the sequel.
One of the biggest new improvements (for those with a spare guitar controller or a friend that has one) is a new multiplayer mode. In the original, you each took turns to play the lead; in the sequel you can co-operate with the second player playing the bass track. Both jamming away on different layers at the same time would be pretty damn cool. Fear not though, fans of the original multiplayer mode - this is just an option and the classic two-player action is still on offer.
The scariest addition is that you will occasionally get chords that require three fret buttons pressed simultaneously; it was already easy to freak when you saw a heap of notes coming at you, but add in one of these bad boys and you’ll really start to sweat! Don’t worry too much though, there will only be a few of these.
Of course the most important aspect of Guitar Hero was picking a good line-up of songs. The original got things right and from the songs that have been confirmed so far, the sequel seems to be headed in the right direction. Of course, because the first was so popular, getting artists support this time around should prove to be easier.
Songs confirmed so far:
1. You Really Got Me - Van Halen
2. Strutter - KISS
3. Who was in my room last night - Butthole Surfers
4. Warpigs - Black Sabbath
5. Arterial Black - Drist
6. Psychobilly Freakout - Reverand Horton Heat
7. YYZ - Rush
8. John the Fisherman - Primus
