AT A GLANCE
| The Good: More of that great online action, but with vehicles. | "The PS2’s main online event gets an upgrade." |
| The Bad: Trying to aim without a mouse. | |
| The Ugly: Being run over by aforementioned vehicles. |
The SOCOM series has been one of the PlayStation 2’s biggest assets, a key to getting owners of the Sony console playing online. Now, SOCOM 3 looks set to raise the bar, with features to rival the likes of Battlefield 2.
For those who haven’t played it, SOCOM is a little like Battlefield’s more serious cousin (not too serious, mind – just more serious). So if you’re looking for a little more realism, then SOCOM 3’s tactical shooting style might be the place to look.
Probably the main attraction in the third incarnation of the game will be the vehicles. Jeeps, tanks, trucks, gunboats: they’ll all be there for you to drive around in (and seriousness tempered with tank-driving is something we could use more of!)
SOCOM 3 will of course be at its best online. It will feature new multiplayer modes, in addition to the standards (which may well feel shiny and new again themselves with the addition of vehicles). Plus, the game will support up to 32 players on a single map.
But wait – that’s not all! Order today, and… No, wait, let me start that again. In addition to its multiplayer prowess, SOCOM 3 also promises solid single-player action, with three campaigns.
So get back into training. You want those thumbs in the top form the Navy Seals require from you. Maybe invest in a USB headset as well. You’ll want it when SOCOM 3 hits the shelves on April 21st. Move out.
