The plight of the AI teammate

Published Saturday 22 Nov 2008 8:19am | 18

Ai Teammates have it tough
I have been playing brothers in arms hells highway recently and the number of men I’ve sent charging wildly at a machine gun nest should have gotten me shot for incompetence of command.

Why is this? The button for take cover is right next to the button to tell your squad to rush the location your targeting ..and when I take cover I’m usually targeted at something quite nasty.

Brothers in arms is not alone in pointless AI Deaths..These guys need a better union.  OSH would have a field day with the developers, Placing inexperienced, often under aged kids in charge of a squad of people so gullible that they will instantly perform any suicidal idea you get into your head unflinchingly.

Team mates are not the only victims! , I first noticed this back in the early 90’s playing X-wing on my 386. Destroy a Star Destroyer with your x-wing (Actually quite easy in the original x-wing , just attack them dead level from behind , they had no guns on the engines) and you get a medal. According to the in-game lore that star destroyer was crewed by about 5000 people.  No all of them were soldiers..What about the poor guys cooking the meals and washing the floors..Kill 5000 people, get a medal, Yay.

Perhaps i should go back to viva piñata and beat some small animals with a spade.

I wish I owned my own Star Destroyer. :( Then I'd sell it and buy more video games.

AI teammates do have it hard, I usually end up killing them just because I'm low on ammo and I don't want to use the enemies guns.

I like what Ubisoft Montreal have done with the AI teammate in PoP. Elika. She's meant to aid you in the fullest possible without ever being a burden to you.

For some reason I'm reminded of the Blind Mudoken's in Abe's Exodus. Perhaps it's because you give them commands, which often send them running to their death unless you're really good!!

Most of them are like crash test dummies, not a log going on upstairs. A good teammate AI is hard to find...

Gosh your right. I remember playing a desert storm game and always having to go running back and save a mate who had gotten himself in the poo. they are getting smarter, i think, but sometimes i wonder if they are just there to get themselves and you killed and piss you off.
