2K Games last week released the E3 trailer for the upcoming futuristic shooter, XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown will place you in control of a secret paramilitary organization called XCOM. As the XCOM commander, you will defend against a terrifying global alien invasion by managing resources, advancing technologies, and overseeing combat strategies and individual unit tactics.

The original X-COM is widely regarded as one of the best games ever made and has now been re-imagined by the strategy experts at Firaxis Games. XCOM: Enemy Unknown will expand on that legacy with an entirely new invasion story, enemies and technologies to fight aliens and defend Earth. You will control the fate of the human race through researching alien technologies, creating and managing a fully operational base, planning combat missions and controlling soldier movement in battle.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is available 12 October 2012 on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

NZGamer.com appears at E3 2012 thanks to Orcon Broadband.

so what does xcom stand for?
eXtraterrestrial COMbat unit

as per the original game manual

"On December 11th 1998, representatives from the world's most
economically powerful countries gathered secretly in Geneva.
After much debate, the decision was made to establish a covert
independent body to combat, investigate and defeat the alien
threat. This organisation would be equipped with the world's
finest pilots, soldiers, scientists and engineers, working together
as one multi-national force.

This organisation was named the Extraterrestrial Combat unit:

XCOM"

Can't wait for this! Loved the first 2 X-com games and this actually looks like it will capture a lot of what made them special. I hope the release a demo sometime soon, so I can see how it feels :)
