Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath

AT A GLANCE

The Good: Kane's back, baby "Not only is it more of the best of C&C, if you preorder you get into the beta..."
The Bad: It's not out until April (PC)
The Ugly: It's not out until July (360)

One of the most memorable moments in Command & Conquer history is the bit in Command & Conquer (the original) where Kane shoots your current commander (Seth) in the head and steps in to start giving you your orders directly. This enigmatic character, played by Joseph D. Kucan, is the seemingly unkillable leader of the Brotherhood of Nod - archenemy to the forces of the GDI (Global Defence Initiative). His strong opposition to the actions of the GDI, played out as the alien Tiberium spreads over the globe, cements the series amongst the most memorable and revered in videogame history.

So, when we hear that there's going to be an expansion to an excellent game in that series (Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars) and that it's going to focus on Kane, we can't help but go a little weak at the knees. Not only that, but preordering the game (which is only fifty bucks) will also net you (in addition to some other goodies) access to the beta of Red Alert 3 (sequel to one of the most beloved RTS games of all time and spin off to Command & Conquer itself) and there's not much point writing the rest of this article. Go preorder it - right now. Right now!

Ok, now that you've pre-ordered it, here's a breakdown of what's in the box that will be arriving at your computer room in early April:

  • New NOD campaign, featuring 13 new missions (spanning from the end of the Firestorm expansion to Tiberium Sun, through Command & Conquer 3 and beyond)

  • All-new "Risk-like" gameplay called Global Conquest, in which the player attempts to take over the entire world, moving their armies around the globe before engaging the enemy in traditional C&C gameplay

  • Units that survive skirmishes in this mode will persist for the first ever time in C&C history, allowing you to take them into the next mission, should you so choose

  • The three factions from Command & Conquer 3 (GDI, Nod and Scrin) will each now have two sub factions, each of which has unique units and tech tree elements to add to the mix

  • New "Epic" units, one for each faction, which are capable of causing massive devastation on the battlefield:

    • The GDI get the MARV, a massive and heavily armored megatank with triple-barrelled rail gun mounted on top - you can also garrison troops inside hard points on each corner, partly so they can fire at things which happen by but most likely their presence is so that they can be entertained when you run right over the top of any enemy units - including mammoth tanks (!)

    • The Nod get a quadruped walker which can garrison troops inside it, simultaenously boosting its firepower and allowing players to customize its weapon loadout

    • The Scrin get a rather large biomechanism which, in addition to doing massive damage with its plasma disks and any troops in the garrisonable hard points, it is also capable of devouring the ruined hulks of enemy units and turning them into credits

  • There's also new units across the board for all factions (including some from previous iterations of the series, previously unavailable in C&C3), 30 new multiplayer maps and the Xbox 360 version (coming to NZ shores in July) features a new radial menu, allowing full access to base functions from anywhere in the map

The second EA is able to get us reviewable code, we'll hit this bad boy hard and get you some hot review action to sink your teeth into. You're excited? Feel these nipples!
