Guild Wars: Eye of the North

AT A GLANCE

The Good: More of pretty much everything for Guild Wars vets. "More armour, more skills, and more heroes!"
The Bad: If you’re new to the series, this expansion won’t do much for you.
The Ugly: The beasties get more beastly.

Straight out of one of the developer’s mouths (in a recent interview) was the idea that this installment of this popular MMO will act (in part) like a prologue to Guild Wars 2. Those of you deep into the action somewhere in this mighty universe will find Eye of the North also much more ‘expansion-like’ than either of the other chapters released after the original; this really is a new collection of bling for experienced characters and offers a decent taste of the upcoming sequel.

Much is being made of two new races to the world – the Norn and the Asura. The former is a Viking-like race from the Far Shiverpeaks and the latter is a magical race from a new area known as the Tarnished Coast. Both will be a major part of the story that continues with the expansion and their homelands will offer many new places to explore and secrets to uncover.

What is it with earthquakes and RPGs? In Eye of the North, earthquakes have opened up a bunch of exciting new areas that you and your character will need to go and nosey around in. Of course you will. Staying home is never an option in these things; that’s why the Sims was invented! According to the developers a hideous menace is waiting down there to shake your hand. And maybe eat it.

Outside of a number of vague generalisations, information on what will really be going on in the new stories that Eye of the North will present is scant. Naturally, the developers don’t want too many secrets out there, but the idea of two new races alone is pretty exciting. There are also some other facts around, although these could well change before release: 150 new skills, 40 new sets of armour and ten new heroes will be included.

Remember to make sure your character is heavy on experience before picking this one up, and, in the mean time, look forward to it.
