In our first hands-on preview we talked about the rich storyline and quests that are key to delivering this fantastic RPG experience. We are happy to say that not only does it never lose it's luster the more you progress, it actually gets even better. We can't give too much away, for fear of ruining the experience, but take it from us - it plays like a ripping fantasy novel.

First of all though, a bit on the skills available in the game. As you level up, you have to make three key choices. The first is which core skills you want to level up. These include lock picking, alchemy, stealth, persuasion, and many more. All are important, and with only a point to spend each level, you have to make some hard choices. The game caps out at 40 levels, so there's no way you can top-out all of the available options. Decisions, decisions...

A good example of this is lock picking. There are a huge number of locked chests throughout the game (and in a wonderful array of different designs and formats), hiding who knows what inside. Locks can be picked based on your skill level - and a bit of dexterous controller twisting - so points spent here can reap serious rewards.

The next choice you need to make each time you level up is where you're going to spend each of the three other points you get given, which you can distribute in either the might, finesse, or sorcery skill trees. Each tree is a decent size, with some of the skills requiring up to six points in order to max them out. Some skills unlock different combat moves, while others can increase damage, duration, etc. There is enough in the trees to suit all play styles.

Lastly you need to choose a fate card. Depending on how you have allocated skill points, differing fates or character types are unlocked that will grant general benefits (like increased range damage, resistance etc). It is a bit confusing at first however it is relatively easy to reset the whole lot with the parting of a bit of gold. Tired of being a ranger type? Well, tonight Matthew, I'm going to be an avenging warrior.

All of this also plays a big part in the weapons you choose. There are daggers, long swords, great swords, hammers, staves, and faeblades. There are differing attributes for each of them, of course, including physical damage, piercing damage, bleed, frost, fire, and lightning - etc. Many items have multiple effects and with the ability to add gems to items, you can have some quite devastating weapon effects.

Combat is a combination of skills and weapon abilities. Start with a simple dagger thrust, but hold down the combat key, then punch it again and you force-punch a wicked dagger strike, with a follow-through and so on. The bleed and fire effects get the blood pumping, as well as the always cheery glow of burning flesh.

Combat is fast and furious. Often you will start with a ranged attack - spell or bow - and then, if you are not particularly well armored, you may want to switch to a medium-range weapon like the spinning chakra disks. Or, if finesse and magic, is not your style, you may want to start the proceedings with a wake up call delivered by way of a huge hammer. Luckily, when you hit the inventory key, the game pauses so you can change weapons mid-combat if you feel the need to do so.

Then there is the finishing or reckoning mode. This is where, through combat, you have built up enough power to unleash a devastating finishing move that wracks up damage and experience points. Did someone say “impale”?

Its not all action in an adventurers life though. Crafting also plays a part in the game. Alchemy is a real boon for health pots and boost potions. Blacksmithing allows you to break down items and make new ones more to your liking (including their special abilities). Sage crafting is about combining gems and socketing them into weapons and armor.

All of these are core skills, so you can't be master of them all without missing out in other important skills. In our first play through, we chose Alchemy and were never short of pots. There are heaps of herbs to pick, and a huge array of different pots you can make (including ones that boost other core skills).

There is a surprising amount of depth in both the skills and crafting aspects of the game. In fact there is enough in this aspect of the game alone to make you want to play through multiple times just to try out the differing combinations. We can't wait for the game to release and our chance to reveal more in our final review.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning releases on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on the 10th of February.

It does look cool, probably the best looking preview around right now, but WTF is with developers these days and pathetically low level caps?

Why does no modern rpg dev (with the recent exception of Bethsoft with Skyrim's full-fat leveling) understand that it is FUN to become an insanely powerful One Man Army? What is the point of a (low) level cap, other than to make a game LESS fun and reduce longevity?

Has anyone here EVER bought a new rpg and said "Woohoo - I top out at level 20/30/40! Awesome, that won't take long! I'm so glad they put THAT in!"

There is a level cap of 40 because, in order to max out one full tree it takes 123 ability points, which is only attainable at level 40. What you're asking for is the removal the destiny system, the fundamental principle of the class and level structure.

Level 122 is your new limit, too bad you'll be 3x more powerful than anything else in the game. I'm pretty sure that won't enhance the fun. And good luck mapping those 20 abilities onto your controller, even a keyboard would struggle, because that's just the abilities, and doesn't include the basics like attacks dodge, block, and all their combinations.

Skyrim has a level cap too (conveniently forgotten). And if full fat means you can learn it all, but you can only use 2 of those things at a time. What's the point. This makes Skyrim look like a nature walk simulator, not saying that's a bad thing, I like nature walks too.... sometimes.

Because it'd break the game and it would become boring because there'd be absolutely no challenge in it. By the time you're at the max level you're pretty much going to be able to beat down on everything anyway if you aren't silly with assigning your points.

Besides, who wants to grind forever?

I don't think huge level caps are very fun at all. It's like using console commands on Skyrim. You feel like a boss for about 10 minutes, then the game feels bland and is exiled to the External HDD forevarrr

But why not have them there as an option? Then, people who need to, can grind up a level or two to give them an advantage, people who love to lay waste to the denizens of the evil land like a bawse can do so, while joe dontcare can just play through the game as intended.

Having a high level cap doesn't mean you have to achieve it, does it? Or does it? An interesting question, to be sure!

I remember back in the day when lvl 30 meant you were an insanely powerful time-bending epic space wizard with adamantium testicles..

No challenge = no fun, no point.

This games looks epic, at first I thought it was only going to be a run of the mill RPG but they've packed it full of content and an awesome combat system which is fast frenetic but fun and competitive! Can't wait for the release ;p

Obviously not many people here feel that way Phantom. Some of the "reasoning" demonstrated by commenters in favour of low level caps honestly just leaves me shaking my head and wondering how people get that dumb. They're basically saying a lower cap is better than a higher cap. Why don't you just ask them to cap the level at 2 then, guys?

Aside from the fact that a higher cap gives you more to do and therefore a longer game, a high level cap doesn't by any means = an easy game, as so many people here fail to see. You could be level 80 in FF7 and still get your miserable ass handed to you by Ruby Weapon.

Calm down, we all have a right to our own opinions on different things, and just because your opinion differs from mine doesn't give you the right to call me dumb.

Nobody on here is "dumb" because of their opinions dude and the fact that you think they are is a little unfortunate.
Oh and you're example of Ruby Weapon in FFVII is kind of flawed in the sense that yes there were one or two super powerful bosses that were a challenge but the rest of the game at that stage was really easy and we're talking about the total experience here.
Anyway, if you don't like the level cap then don't buy the game? Food for thought.

As a comparison Diablo 2 had a cap of 99, and you gained 1 skill point per level. Reckoning is done by giving 3 per level, in theory 3x40, it would have a 120 cap if handled the same way. I'm not arguing against high caps, just the logic used. I'm confident you'll feel badass at level 40, the devs are not mugs.

On a related note. The developers have said that there is end game content that only opens up after you beat the game, any other game that I've played that does this, has meant you'll need to grind just like in FFVII before or after you beat the main quest in order to handle it.

Time will tell.

I hate him I hate him I hate him... for my sins I work in close proximity to Mike Gunn... I hate him I hate him I hate him..........He went on about this game he said I had to download the demo... he said I have been playing it and it is great... we are old WOW clan mates....I hate him I hate him I hate Him... he keeps on about this new game.... I was currently distracted by Skyrim and enjoying it.. So after hearing about this game for a week I decided to download the demo... I enjoyed it it was brilliant the graphics looked cool I loved the fighting and the leveling system it promised so much... then the 45min cap hit me I was addicited to this game I rushed back to work the next morning demanding how he had played 20 hours.. to hear that fateful line- " oh I got an early release copy to play.. yeah shame about the 45 min demo cut off but you will love the game".... I hate him I hate him I hate him......for that reason I resisted until Friday last week he turns up in a Rekoning tee shirt saying oh I had to start again for the 360 review but the game is brilliant they have cleaned this up and that up blah...blah..blah.... I have now pre ordered the game I couldn't stand it... I hate him I hate him I hate him.....Nice preview though...
