Find out what the Spore Creature Creator is all about!
Spore Creature Creator Feature
Spore is almost here! And in the meantime, EA has tossed us a bone in the form of the Spore Creature Creator.
No idea what I’m talking about? Let me get you up to speed. Spore is the latest title to come from mad genius Will Wright. You may not have heard of him, but you will have no doubt played some of his games – he was the driving force behind games like Sim City and The Sims. So going by that alone, you have reason to get pretty excited.
Spore has been nicknamed “Sim Everything”, and with good cause. It essentially has you controlling a creature and species from the micro organism stage right up to intergalactic conquest, with almost everything in between. To read up on it more, check out our coverage here.
One of the many interesting things about Spore is how everyone’s individual worlds and galaxies will be populated with creatures that have been made, not by EA, but by you and I. Will Wright has described it as a “massively single player game” – and by this he means everyone in the world makes everyone else’s content.
This is where the Spore Creature Creator comes in. EA has decided to release this small part of the game early, in order to have hundreds of thousands of creatures ready from day one to fill up your copy of the game. It’s a smart move, and it lets us get creative a lot earlier!
So how is the Creature Creator? Put simply, it’s quite a lot of fun if you’ve got the kind of imagination that can come up with wacky creature designs. It might feel slightly limited at first, but as you improve, you’ll find there are quite a few weird options, and you can make a huge variety of creatures, from a giraffe to a walking plant. There are limitations, but in general you could spend hours upon hours making creatures and still come up with something unique every time.
But what’s most impressive is that this power is coupled with an interface that is extremely easy to use. Molding a creature’s spine, giving them several sets of legs, and painting their coat is all really easy and intuitive – you can tell a lot of work has gone into it.
You can download the free demo of the Creature Creator here, or purchase the full version for about $10. In the meantime, check out the following creatures – they’re my favourites so far, but I’m sure as people get more time with the Creator, we’ll be seeing some truly strange and incredible creatures!
