Top 10: 2012 Videogame Soundtracks, So Far

Soundtracks worth listening to.

A good soundtrack can mean the difference between a good and a great game; in much the same way it will impact your enjoyment of a TV show or a movie, perhaps. There have been some amazing games, with even more notable soundtracks, this year, so I thought I'd collate the Top 10 2012 Videogame Soundtracks so far; you know, in case you missed something.

If you're interested in buying them, the best place is - for most people - iTunes. If you don't have Apple hooked into your veins, you could always ask your local retailer, or Google for each soundtrack and see what comes up.

To keep things interesting, I've sorted them in reverse order. For suspense and stuff.

Check it out...

10. Max Payne 3: The Official Soundtrack

Max Payne 3

Max is back. He’s trying to start anew, in a foreign country, and failing miserably. This soundtrack has elements of traveling to exoctic locations while also providing tracks that New York Rock band HEALTH thought would showcase Payne's troubles.

9. Diablo III Original Soundtrack

Diablo III

Dark, ominous, and a welcome return to the tune from Tristram. Diablo III’s soundtrack brought back a really great line up, remastering several tracks from Diablo II: Lord of Destruction and adding a few new entries composed by none other than Russell Brower (World of Warcraft, Batman: The Animated Series.)

8. Mass Effect 3 Game Soundtrack

Mass Effect 3

Mass Effect 3’s action packed sci-fi score is unbelievable, and definitely notable in my opinion. It has such a massive line up of composers including Clint Mansell (Requiem for a dream - Film), Christopher Lennertz (Overlord), and Sascha Dikiciyan & Cris Velasco from previous titles.

7. Silent Hill: Downpour Original Soundtrack

Silent Hill: Downpour

Even without Akira Yamaoka, the original Silent Hill composer, Daniel Licht (Dexter) takes his place, and his interpretation of the misty town of Silent Hill is still a very dark and disturbing place. This album includes the opening theme ‘Silent Hill’ which was performed by Jonathan Davis (Korn's lead vocalist).

6. Binary Domain Original Soundtrack

Binary Domain

I’m a huge fan of electronic music with orchestral elements, and Binary Domain has some amazing pieces from Mitsuharu Fukuyama which are so epic they could easily be implemented in blockbuster film.

Wow, I haven't heard a SINGLE one of these. I feel wildly left out...

Nice write-up though, I too appreciate the power of a good soundtrack. Music that hooks you in makes a game all the more immersive.

I know that you will probably get posts from folk saying this or that sountrack should have been here or there, but one soundrack that deserves notice is the music from Pixeljunk shooter series. It's by H.F.B or High frequency bandwidth which is composed of Dom beken and none other than Alex Paterson, he whom created a whole genre of music, ambient house (Little Fluffy Clouds)under the moniker of The Orb. A good enough list none the less...

Definitely check them out!

What kind of music are you into? I bought and listened to a ridiculous amount of soundtracks and games this year for this write up, I could point you in a direction.

Any games that you played this year that stand out for you where music had a good impact in immersion?

I was about to flip out until I finally saw Fez at the end. Deserves that top spot without a doubt.
