A Kickstarter campaign has been launched for Children of Zodiarcs, a tactical JRPG inspired by Final Fantasy Tactics, Shining Force, and Tactics Ogre, with the support of Square Enix's indie incubator, Square Enix Collective.
Children of Zodiarcs is being developed by Cardboard Utopia, a seven-person team of AAA veterans who have collectively worked on the likes of Eternal Darkness, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, The Warriors, and Far Cry 3. It combines typical strategy RPG mechanics with card- and dice-battle elements, resulting in "he perfect balance between tactics and influenced luck," after months of prototyping.
Like many JRPGs, Children of Zodiarcs is very story-driven, following a group of outcasts as they rebel against a corrupt and vicious society.
"Children of Zodiarcs is a very personal story for us at Cardboard Utopia. As lifelong fans of JRPGs, we grew up with stories of amazing fantasy worlds, relatable and memorable characters, with surprising (often shocking) plot twists," the Kickstarter campaign page reads. "Recapturing those emotions and that sense of wonder is one of our company's primary motivations. We have been developing the world of Zodiarcs for over a year now, making sure to create a rich universe, full of mysteries and unexpected revelations."
The game is initially being developed for PC only, but PlayStation 4 and PS Vita releases are also possible, depending on how much money the campaign is able to raise. It's expected to release in August this year, and pledging at least CAD $20 will secure you a copy when the game launches. The campaign has a goal of CAD $50,000, and at the time of writing, it's at just over $25,000, with 28 days to go.
