Mortal Kombat X players who haven't purchased add-on characters will get a chance to take them for a test run from time to time, as part of the game's Challenge Towers mode.
Mortal Kombat X has three different Challenge Towers with rotating objectives - Quick Tower, Daily Tower, and Premiere Tower. On Twitter this weekend, the game's creator Ed Boon revealed that DLC characters will sometimes feature in the Premiere Tower, and when they do, everyone will be able to play them, regardless of whether or not they've purchased the character in question.
MKX Sneak Peek: You can complete Premiere towers that feature (and let U play) DLC characters even if you haven't purchased that character!— Ed Boon (@noobde) April 10, 2015
Four DLC characters have been revealed so far: Jason Voorhees, Predator, Tanya, and Tremor. They're all included in the Kombat Pack, along with a selection of skins, and will also be available to purchase individually.
Boon also outlined a profile image system, with different backgrounds, borders, and icons unlockable by playing through Challenge Towers. As well as creating a visual profile badge for each player, these options come with bonuses to things like experience points and Koins. In the example given by Boon, a background earned from the second Premiere Tower (the "MK1 Tower") gives +100 Koins per fatality, while the icon gives +100 XP per match win and the border gives +75 FXP per match win.
